• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins men's tennis team won a pair of split squad matches on Saturday, beating 27th-ranked Bates (5-4) and Dickinson (8-1).

How it Happened • Dickinson
• Hopkins opened Centennial Conference play with an 8-1 win at Dickinson. Junior Justin Kang and freshman Joseph Cartledge on 8-4 at first doubles over Shawn Diniz and Samuel Loring.
• Sophomores Nakul Narendran and Coline Muraika dropped just one game as they beat Derek Chen and Nicholas Reese at second. Freshmen Vik Vasan and Matt Sklar won 8-6 over Qi Hua and Jackson Claudio at third.
• The Blue Jays then won five of the six singles matches to take the win. Kang opened singles play with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Diniz at first. Claudio picked up the Red Devils' lone point with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Sklar at second.
• Freshman Aaron Carey won by the same score as Kang over Chen at third. Narendran took a 6-0 decision in his first set but the pulled out a 7-6 (5) win in the second set against Loring.
• Freshman Nathan Safran beat Reese 6-2, 6-1 at fifth and classmate Elliott Seckler defeated Hua 6-2, 6-3 at sixth.

How it Happened • Bates
• Ben Rosen and Chris Ellis grabbed the first point of the match with an 8-5 win over seniors Mike Buxbaum and Jeremy Dubin at first. Senior Emerson Walsh and freshman Austin Gu then tied the match as they beat Josh Leiner and Josh Quijano, 8-6, at second.
• Junior David Perez and sophomore Scott Thygesen sent Hopkins into singles play with a 2-1 lead after they beat Jacob Kauppila and Vidyut Yadav, 8-6.
• Ellis picked up the first point of singles and tied the match with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Thygesen at second. Adam Schwartz then put the Bobcats up, 3-2, as he beat Gu 6-3, 6-1 at fifth.
• Perez evened the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Quijano at third and freshman Cody Kim gave the Blue Jays the lead with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Brent Feldman at sixth.
• Walsh clinched the win for Hopkins and gave it a 5-3 lead with a 7-6 (3), 6-1 win over Pat Ordway at fourth. Rosen closed out the match with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win over Buxbaum at first.

What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 30-3 all-time against Dickinson and has won 24 straight in the series.
• Hopkins has now won four straight over Bates and improves to 5-1 all-time against the Bobcats.

For the Record
• Head coach Chuck Willenborg now has 196 career wins in his 12th season at the helm.
