The Short Story
• Senior Ryan Orgielewicz hit a home run to help the 19th-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team to a 4-1 victory at 29th-ranked Catholic Wednesday.
• Hitting in the leadoff spot, third baseman Mike Eberle singled to right field to begin the game, but the Blue Jays flied out in order without scoring a run. In the top of the second, however, Hopkins worked its way home. Cardinals starter Brown hit Alex Darwiche and Dillon Bowman to put two on base. Jon Hayden hit a single to right field to second Darwiche home, and Daniel Albert sent up a sacrifice fly to increase JHU's lead to 2-0.
• Catholic cut the Hopkins lead in the bottom of the third. After a pair of singles, a pair of ground outs advanced the runners around the bases, with Tracy reaching home and Hennessy earning the RBI. Brian Lin caught the ball in right field off of the bat of Cotter to strand Williams on third.
• The Blue Jays returned their lead to two runs in the top of the fifth. With one out, TJ Gordon reached first base as third baseman Hennessy could not properly field his bunt. Eberle followed Gordon on base on an error as first baseman Cotter overthrew second in a double play attempt. With Gordon on third and Eberle on second, pitcher, Belcher, balked, sending Gordon home for the 3-1 Hopkins lead.
• JHU scored its final run in the top of the eighth. Facing Catholic's Gately on the mound with two outs, Orgielewicz knocked the ball over the leftfield fence. The ball stayed fair for the Blue Jay home run and 4-1 lead.
• Neither team could round home in the final inning and a half. Cameron Mineo picked up the save for Johns Hopkins, striking out the final two Cardinal batters to close out the game. Jack Bunting started the game for the Blue Jays, pitching seven innings and striking out four. Bunting earned his first win on the season, giving up six hits and one run to the Cardinals. John Donohue struck out two in 1.1 innings pitched, surrendering one hit. The five Catholic pitchers combined to give up just three Blue Jay hits in the loss, although the Cardinals committed four costly errors in the game.
