The Short Story
? The fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to come from behind to defeat Haverford, 4-1, and move on to Sunday's Centennial Conference championship. The Blue Jays need just one victory to secure the Centennial title.
? Nick Bodner started on the mound for the Blue Jays. Bodner kept the Fords off the board through four innings before giving up the lone Haverford run off a Owen Plambeck home run to right field. The junior struck out a Ford in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth inning. Bodner scattered five hits through 7.0 innings.
? After seven scoreless innings against Haverford starting pitcher Brandon Jenkins, the Hopkins bats came alive in the bottom of the eighth inning. Mike Smith reached first as he was hit by a pitch, and Ryan Orgielewicz singled, the first hit for the Blue Jays since the third inning. Tommy Mee followed suit with a single to left center, driving in Smith to tie the score, 1-1. Alex Darwiche recorded the third-straight hit against Jenkins, doubling down the left field line to give the Blue Jays the 2-1 lead as Orgielewicz rounded home. Haverford sent Anthony Rizzo to the mound, and Mike Eberle was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jon Hayden entered as a pinch hitter for Hopkins, hitting a single through the left side to drive in Mee. Joe Conlon also came in as a pinch hitter, working a four-pitch walk with the bases loaded to send Darwiche home for the 4-1 Hopkins lead.
? Josh Hejka pitched the final inning for the Blue Jays, retiring the first two batters he faced before surrendering back-to-back hits, the only hits allowed by a Hopkins reliever. Will Karp grounded out to end the game for the JHU win.
