• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins men's tennis team took a 2-1 lead after doubles and then won three singles matches to defeat 20th-ranked Bates, 5-4, on Friday night.
How it Happened
• Hopkins opened the match with an 8-4 win at third doubles as sophomores Joe Cartledge and Austin Gu beat Vid Yadav and Duane Davis. Josh Quijano and Josh Leiner then tied the match with an 8-5 win over freshmen Vishnu Joshi and Eric Yoo at second. Senior David Perez and junior Scott Thygesen put the Blue Jays back on top with an 8-6 win over Ben Rosen and Jacob Kauppila at first.
• Cartledge pushed Hopkins lead to 3-1 in the match as he beat Jacob Eisenberg 6-4, 6-1 at sixth singles. Kauppila pulled the Bobcats back within one with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Gu at fourth.
• Quijano then tied the match as he beat Yoo 7-5, 6-3 at second singles. Perez answered with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Yadav at fifth to put the Blue Jays back on top, 4-3.
• Sophomore Cody Kim then clinched the win as he defeated Leiner 6-0, 6-3 at third. Rosen closed out the match with a close 7-6 (9), 6-4 win at first over Joshi.
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 6-1 all-time against Bates and wins its fifth straight in the series.
