• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins men's tennis team picked up two wins on Saturday, including its Centennial Conference opener. Hopkins opened the day with an 8-1 win over Dickinson and then shutout NYU, 9-0.
How it Happened • Dickinson
• Hopkins opened the match by sweeping doubles to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Senior Justin Kang and freshman Alex Matisse grabbed the first point with an 8-3 win at first doubles over Shawn Diniz and Sam Loring.
• Sophomore Vik Vasan and freshman Bryan Chu followed with an 8-6 win at second over Peter Schmidt and Derek Chen. Freshman Jack Hogan and sophomore Colin Muraika wrapped up doubles play with an 8-2 win at third over Joey Bolanos and Nick Reese.
• Kang pushed the Blue Jays' lead to 4-0 when he lost just one game in his defeat of Diniz at first singles. Bolanos picked up a point for the Red Devils with a 7-6, 6-4 win at fifth over sophomore Nathan Safran.
• Freshman Robby Simon then clinched the win for Hopkins with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Chen at third. Sophomore Aaron Carey grabbed a 7-6, 6-1 win at second over Schmidt.
• Freshman Matt Lurie won 6-4, 6-2 at fourth over Loring and sophomore Charlie Humes beat Bryce Perritt 6-3, 6-2 at sixth.
How it Happened • New York University
• Hopkins dropped just eight games in doubles as the Blue Jays jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Violets. Junior Scott Thygesen and senior David Perez picked up an 8-4 win at first over Umberto Setter and Zeb Zheng.
• Freshman Eric Yoo and Vishnu Joshi lost two games in their win at second over Benedict Teoh and Michael Li. Sophomores Joe Cartledge and Austin Gu turned the same trick at third in their win over Rahul Das and Joshua Piatos.
• Hopkins then swept the singles matches to complete the sweep. Thygesen earned the first singles point when he beat Das 6-2, 6-1 at second. Gu then lost just one game to Aaron Mackie at fourth singles to clinch the win for JHU.
• Cartledge followed with a 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Piatos at sixth to make it a 6-0 match. Joshi then beat Setter 6-4, 6-2 at first.
• Kim picked up a 6-4, 7-6 (2) win at third over Li and Perez completed the sweep with a 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (11) defeat of Vishal Walia at fifth.
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 31-3 all-time against Dickinson and has now won 25 straight in the series.
• This is the first meeting between the Blue Jays and the Violets since the 1930s.
