The Basics

• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins baseball took a 4-1 lead into the top of the ninth, but five straight singles from Messiah gave the Falcons a 4-3 lead, as they claimed the come-from-behind win on Monday afternoon.

How it Happened
• Hopkins put two on in the bottom of the first inning with no outs, but Messiah starter Brandon Shirk got the next three batters out to escape the inning.
Nathan Davis was hit by a pitch to lead off the second and Mike Eberle followed with a walk to put runners on first and second for Frank Clara, who doubled to left to score Davis, but the Blue Jays would leave Eberle and Clara stranded.
• Hopkins went up 3-0 in the third as Alex Darwiche doubled to left and later scored on an error. Eberle knocked in Davis, who had reached on the error that scored Darwiche, to make the score 3-0.
• The Falcons got to JHU starter Preston Betz in the fifth as Nick Goodwin took the Betz pitch over the right-field wall to make the score 3-1.
• Five straight singles in the top of the ninth would put Messiah up 4-3 and though Zach Jaffe doubled to lead off the bottom of the ninth, he would be left stranded as the Falcons held on for the one-run win.

• Betz set a new career-high with nine strikeouts and 7.1 innings pitched. He became the second Blue Jay to strike out nine batters in a game this season. (Alex Ross struck out nine against Cortland St. on Sunday). Betz allowed just three hits and one run in his second outing of the season.
• Five different Blue Jay players recorded a hit in the game.
• Kuntz pitched four innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. He gave up two hits and struck out nine.
