• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins men's tennis team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon, including one in conference play, to move to 13-3 on the season. Hopkins opened the day with a shutout of visiting Ursinus and then made the short trip to Goucher and blanked the Gophers.
How it Happened • Ursinus
• Hopkins jumped out to a 3-0 lead on visiting Ursinus by sweeping the doubles matches. Sophomores Joe Cartledge and Nathan Safran picked up the first point of the match as they beat Matt Fontanese and Connor DeFaber-Schumacher, 8-0, at third.
• Freshman Jack Hogan and junior Colin Muraika followed with an 8-4 win over Mason Groff and Peter Shields at second. Freshman Vishnu Joshi and sophomore Vik Vasan closed out doubles play with an 8-4 win over Max Oberholtzer and Paul Vecchio at first.
• Sophomore Charlie Humes pushed the Blue Jays' lead to four with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Fontanese at sixth singles. Cartledge then clinched the victory when he beat Groff 6-4, 6-2 at first.
• Freshman Robby Simon followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Vecchio at second to make it 6-0. Hogan then defeated Jake Lachowicz, 8-0, at fifth.
• Freshman Matt Lurie make it an 8-0 match as he beat Shields 6-0, 6-3 at third. Muraika wrapped up the match with an 8-6 victory at fourth over DeFaber-Schmacher.
How it Happened • Goucher
• The Blue Jays dropped just seven games as they grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the match after doubles. Joshi and Vasan picked up the first point of the match when they beat Jack Hodges and Tetsuya Ota, 8-2, at first.
• Sophomore Aaron Carey and senior David Perez then beat Elliot Diehl and Slade Dumas, 8-1, at third. Sophomore Austin Gu and senior Justin Kang closed out doubles play with an 8-4 defeat of Michael Herman and Frankie Mullinix at second.
• Vasan made it a 4-0 match when he beat Diehl 6-2, 6-0 at sixth singles. Perez clinched the win for Hopkins with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Mullinix at fourth.
• Gu followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win at second over Hodges and Joshi beat Ota 6-3, 6-3 at first. Carey was a 7-5, 6-1 winner at fifth over Dumas. Kang ended the match and completed the shutout with a 6-0, 7-6 at third over Herman.
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 38-4 all-time against Ursinus and wins its 27th straight in the series. Hopkins is now 6-2 against Goucher in the first meeting between the two since 2004.
• The Blue Jays have now won 23 straight regular season conference matches and 107 of their last 108.
