• The Short Story: The 23rd-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team upset visiting and 16th-ranked Swarthmore, 5-3, on Saturday afternoon to secure the Centennial Conference regular season championship.
How it Happened
• The Garnet picked up wins at second and third to take a 2-1 lead into singles. Jiung Jung and Simon Vernier earned the first point of the match with an 8-0 win over freshman Vishnu Joshi and sophomore Vik Vasan.
• John Lathrop and Thibault Vernier pushed the visitor's lead to two when they edged sophomores Joe Cartledge and Austin Gu, 8-6. Senior David Perez and junior Scott Thygesen cut the deficit in half as they beat Mark Fallati and Josh Powell, 8-5, at first. The Garnet duo are ranked third in the ITA Atlantic South.
• Gu tied the match at two all with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at fifth singles over Jung. Joshi put Hopkins on top, 3-2, when he beat Fallati 6-0, 7-5. Fallati, ranked sixth in the Atlantic South, was ahead 5-2 in the second set before Joshi rallied to win 7-5 and grab the win. Senior Justin Kang followed with a 6-1, 7-5 win at sixth over Lathrop to put the Blue Jays on the brink of victory.
• Thygesen pushed Hopkins over the brink and secured the regular season title when he beat Thibault Vernier 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 at second. Simon Vernier grabbed a point for Swarthmore, making it a 5-3 match, when freshman Eric Yoo retired in the third set due to cramps. Yoo won the first set, 6-2, but Simon Vernier won the second, 7-5, and was up 4-0 in the third when Yoo retired at third. Sophomore Cody Kim dopped his first set, 6-4, at fourth but responded with a 6-2 win in the second. He was up 5-4 in the third when the match was called due to rain.
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 21-26 all-time against Swarthmore and has won 19 of the last 20 in the series.
• The Blue Jays win their 25th straight regular season Centennial Conference match and claim their 12th regular season title. Hopkins will host the Centennial Conference Tournament May 5 and 6.
• Kang moves into a tie for 12th in school history with his 47th career singles win. Thygesen is tied for 22nd in school history with 36 career doubles wins.
