• The Short Story: The 24th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team upset host and 17th-ranked Mary Washington, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon to wrap up the regular season.
How it Happened
• Hopkins grabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles with wins at first and second. Sophomores Joe Cartledge and Austin Gu picked up the first point of the match with an 8-3 win over Ryland Byrd and Michael Fleming, the fifth-ranked doubles team in the region.
• Freshman Vishnu Joshi and sophomore Vik Vasan followed with an 8-3 win at third over Derek Hagino and Patrick Hughes to put the Blue Jays on top 2-0. Moses Hutchinson and Matt Miles cut the Eagles' deficit in half when they defeated seniors Justin Kang and David Perez, 8-6, at second.
• Fleming grabbed the first singles point to tie the match at 2-2. He beat freshman Eric Yoo 6-4, 6-1 at third. Kang answered with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Hagino at fifth to put Hopkins back on top, 3-2. Hughes once again tied the match when he beat sophomore Cody Kim 6-2, 6-3 at second.
• Joshi followed with a win over Miles, ranked seventh in the region, 7-6 (1), 6-4 at first to give the Jays a 4-3 lead. Gu then clinched the win for Hopkins when he defeated Byrd 7-6 (2), 6-3 at fourth. Cole Tecce earned a point for the Eagles at sixth after beating Perez in three sets 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 14-5 against Mary Washington, including 6-5 in Fredericksburg. The Blue Jays have won three straight and 11 of the last 12 against the Eagles.
Up Next
• Hopkins will take on the winner of the first-round match between Washington College and Franklin & Marshall on Saturday in the Centennial Conference semifinals. The match is slated for a 1:00 pm start.
