Top-Ranked Middlebury Defeats Johns Hopkins in NCAA Sweet 16

• The Short Story: Host and top-ranked Middlebury defeated the 24th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team, 5-1, on Sunday afternoon in the NCAA Sweet 16.

How it Happened
• The Panthers took a 2-1 lead into singles play after three great doubles matches. Timo van der Geest and Peter Martin picked up the first point of the match when they beat freshman Vishnu Joshi and sophomore Vik Vasan, 8-4, at third.
• Sophomores Joe Cartledge and Austin Gu answered with a 9-7 win at second over Noah Farrell and William de Quant to tie the match at 1-1. Lubomir Cuba and Kyle Schlanger then put Middlebury on top with a close 9-7 win over senior David Perez and junior Scott Thygesen at first.
• Nate Eaznor pushed the Panthers' lead to 3-1 as he grabbed a 6-1, 6-4 win at fifth singles over Gu. de Quant then beat freshman Eric Yoo 6-1, 6-1 at second. Andre Xiao followed with a 6-0, 6-4 win over senior Justin Kang at sixth to send Middlebury to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

• Hopkins falls to 1-2 all-time against Middlebury with all three meetings coming in the NCAA Tournament. The Blue Jays are 17-13 in 13 NCAA Tournament appearances with 11 Sweet 16 appearances.
• Kang finishes his career with 49 career singles wins, 43 doubles wins and 92 total wins. He is tied for 11th in career singles wins, is 20th in career doubles wins and is tied for 15th in total wins. Perez finishes with 43 singles wins, 49 career doubles wins and 92 total wins.
