Austin Gu advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Southeast Singles Championship this weekend at Mary Washington. He also advanced to the doubles championship, partnered with classmate
Joe Cartledge.

How it Happened • Singles Bracket
• Gu opened the weekend with a come-from-behind win over Harry Shepherd (Washington & Lee). Shepherd won the first set 7-5, but Gu rallied to win the second (6-2) and third (7-5) to advance. He came from behind again in the second round, beating John Lathrop (Swarthmore) 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-3. Gu then won in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5 over Patrick Hughes (Mary Washington). He came from behind for a third time in his quarterfinal win over Ray Boppana (Carnegie Mellon) 1-6, 6-3, 7-5. Gu's run ended in the semifinals to top-seeded Daniel Levine (Carnegie Mellon) 6-1, 6-1.
• Senior
Scott Thygesen beat Bobby Neuner (Washington & Lee) 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 in the first round. He then rallied to beat Cole Tecce (Mary Washington) 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the round of 16. Thygesen's day ended with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 loss to Levine.
• Sophomore
Matt Lurie lost his first-round match in three sets, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-0 to Thibault Vernier (Swarthmore).
• Freshman
Naevin Anukornchailku grabbed a 7-6 (4), 6-1 win over Joseph Brown (Mary Washington) in the first round. He then advanced into the round of 16 after Paul Monson (Southern Virginia) retired in the third set. Monson had won the first set, but Anukornchailku won the second 6-2 and was up 1-0 in the third. His run ended with a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Boppana.
• Sophomore
Eric Yoo lost his first-round match 6-2, 6-3 to Clark Safran (Carnegie Mellon). Cartledge also lost in the first round, falling 7-5, 6-1 to Chaz Downing (Carnegie Mellon).
• Junior
Aaron Carey lost just two games in his opening win over Robert Levin (Carnegie Mellon) 6-2, 6-0. He followed with a 7-6 (4), 7-5 win over George Jiang (Haverford). Carey then lost in the round of 16 to Leonid Sorkin (Dickinson) 7-5, 6-0.
• Sophomore
Vishnu Joshi, seeded second in the draw, opened with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Kevin Xu (Swarthmore). He then topped Mitchell Thomas (Washington & Lee) 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 to advance to the round of 16. Joshi beat Derek Hagino (Mary Washington) in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 but then fell to Sorkin 6-0, 0-6, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

How it Happened • Doubles
• After a first-round bye, Gu and Cartledge opened with an 8-1 win over Jake Sandler and Chris Salisbury (Washington College). The pair then beat Lathrop and Vernier 8-5. In the quarterfinals, Gu and Cartledge topped second-seeded Moses Hutchison and Matthew Miles (Mary Washington) 8-7 (2). They then lost to Colt Williamson and Ian Siew (Salisbury) 8-1 in the semifinals.
• Freshman
Ryan Hellinger and sophomore
Alex Matisse opened with an 8-3 win over Adrian Charchalis and Andrew Pace (Franklin & Marshall). They then lost to top-seeded Downing and Levine, 8-2, in the round of 32. Â
• Juniors
Vik Vasan and
Cody Kim had a first-round bye and then beat Cole Pawlak and Cannon Secord (Bridgewater). The pair then lost in the round of 16 to Hagino and Ryland Byrd 8-2.
• Yoo and Carey won their first match, beating Brandon Braud and Alex Kulvivat (Randolph) 8-2. They then lost a tough one to Josh Moskovitz and Kevin Yan (Haverford), 8-7 (2).
• Joshi and Thygesen also had a first-round bye but then lost their first match to Tecce and Patrick Hughes 8-7 (4).
