• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins water polo team, seeded second in the tournament, opened the 2019 CWPA Division III Championship with a pair of wins Saturday. Hopkins beat Austin College, 23-11, and followed with a 20-14 win over Connecticut College.
 
How it Happened • Austin
• Hopkins jumped out to a five-goal lead in the game's opening three and a half minutes, led by sophomore Jayden Kunwar's first-quarter hat trick. Austin got on the board with 4:12 to play in the quarter and the teams swapped scores over the ensuing 78 seconds as the Blue Jays led 7-2. Junior Stephen Schmidt pushed the Jays' lead to six with two minutes remaining, but the 'Roos answered with back-to-back goals. Senior Finn Banks scored with five ticks on the clock to send Hopkins into the second with a 9-4 lead.
• The Blue Jays scored the first four goals of the second before a late Austin goal made it a 13-5 game at the half. Hopkins came out firing in the third, outscoring Austin, 6-1, in the stanza to push out to a 19-6 lead. The 'Roos had the edge in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Blue Jays, 5-4, but the 13-goal deficit was too much to overcome.
 
How it Happened • Connecticut College
• Kunwar sandwiched a pair of goals around an early strike by the Camels and the Blue Jays jumped out to a 2-1 lead. Conn College then scored back-to-back goals to go up 3-2. Junior Olin Shipstead answered with a goal to tie the game and spark a 4-1 run that saw JHU take a 6-4 lead early in the second quarter.
• The Camels trimmed the deficit to one at the 6:45-mark, but freshman Chris Freese and sophomore Emerson Sullivan answered with goals to push the lead to 8-5. CC got one back to pull within two with 2:56 to go in the quarter, but JHU would tack on three more to take an 11-6 lead into the half.
• Conn College scored a pair of goals just 55 seconds apart to open the third and trim the deficit to three. Hopkins responded with three straight to go up 14-8 with 2:15 still to go in the quarter. The Camels ended the run with a pair of goals in the final 90 seconds to make it a four-goal game. It was a high-scoring fourth quarter as the teams combined for 10 goals and Hopkins took the 20-14 win.
 
What it Means
• Hopkins is now 2-0 versus Austin, with both meetings coming this season. The Blue Jays improve to 14-0 all-time against the Camels, including 13-0 at the CWPA DIII Championships.
• The Blue Jays are now 75-9 in the championships and will play in the championship for the 27th time in 27 appearances.
 
Inside the Box Score
• Kunwar led the Blue Jays with six goals, including the 100th of his career, and three assists in the win over the 'Roos. Sullivan and Banks added five goals each, while Banks also handed out three assists and six steals.
• Against the Camels, Kunwar scored a game-high seven goals. Banks scored four and handed out two assists, while junior Nico Ivanov had a goal and five assists. Junior Max Fleming tied his career high with 14 saves in the win.
• Banks has moved into eighth place in school history with 319 points. In addition, he needs nine goals to become just the 10th player in program history with 200 career goals. Ivanov now ranks 24th in school history with 160 career points. He needs just three goals to get to 100 for his career while Shipstead needs just five points to reach 100 for his career.

• Hopkins takes on fourth-ranked and top-seeded MIT in the championship game on Sunday, October 27. The match is slated for a Noon start.
