Johns Hopkins Upends Third-Ranked Claremont

• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins water polo team split its matches on the first day of the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament. Hopkins opened with a win over host and third-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and then dropped the nightcap to seventh-ranked Cal Lutheran.
 
How it Happened • Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
• After surrendering the game's opening goal, Hopkins got back-to-back goals from junior Olin Shipstead and senior Finn Banks to go up 2-1. The Stags would score with 33 seconds remaining in the opening quarter to tie the score at two.
• The teams traded scores in the second quarter and they were tied at four at the half. Claremont sandwiched a pair of goals around a strike from sophomore Jayden Kunwar and led 6-5. Hopkins answered with goals from sophomore Jake Pearson and Banks just 18 seconds apart to grab a 7-6 lead with 7:06 to go in the fourth. The teams would swap scores for the remainder of the game with junior Nico Ivanov scoring the game-winner with 1:12 to play.
 
How it Happened • Cal Lutheran
• Hopkins grabbed an early 3-2 lead but a three-goal run by Cal Lutheran gave the Kingsmen a 5-3 lead at the first quarter break. Banks opened the second-quarter scoring to pull the Blue Jays within one but back-to-back Kingsmen goals pushed the lead to three with 5:43 to go.
• The teams would trade scores for the ensuing nine minutes and Cal Lutheran led 12-9 at the 2:48-mark of the third. CLU then outscored JHU, 5-2 over the remainder of the game to take the 17-11 win.    
 
What it Means
• Hopkins is now 7-7 all-time against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and 5-2 against Cal Lutheran.  
 
Inside the Box Score
• Against the Stags, Banks led the Blue Jays with three goals, an assist and two blocks while Kunwar had two goals and two assists. Junior Max Fleming made seven saves in the win.
• In the nightcap, Bank posted another hat trick, his sixth of the season. Ivanov added a goal and a game-high four helpers and six steals. Shipstead chipped in three goals for his first hat trick of the season.
• Banks now ranks 12th in program history with 274 career points and 14th with 167 career goals. Ivanov meanwhile moved into 19th with 57 career assists.

• Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, October 5 against top-ranked Whittier and sixth-ranked Redlands.
