• The Short Story: Eighteenth-ranked George Washington used strong second and fourth quarters to defeat Johns Hopkins, 17-9, in the opening round of the 2019 Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Championship Friday night.
 
How it Happened
• GW jumped out to a 3-1 lead but goals by sophomore Jayden Kunwar and freshman Kamran Eslami pulled the Blue Jays even with 2:08 to go in the first quarter. The Colonials grabbed a 4-3 lead at the end of one with a goal in the final minute.
• George Washington scored the first two of the second quarter to push its lead to 6-3 midway through. Sophomore Emerson Sullivan halted the run with a goal at the 3:37-mark to trim the deficit to two, but the Colonials answered with back-to-back goals in a 56-second span to take a 8-4 lead into the half.
• Hopkins opened the third-quarter scoring with a goal from Kunwar, but two straight for GW made it a 10-5 game. The Blue Jays answered with goals from Kunwar and sophomore Jacob Whitaker as they cut it to three heading into the fourth.
• GW scored two quick goals to open the fourth and push out to a 12-7 lead, but JHU answered with goals from Sullivan and Kunwar. It was all Colonials from there however as they outscored the Blue Jays, 5-0, in the final three and a half minutes.
 
What it Means
• Hopkins falls to 53-34 all-time against George Washington as the Colonials win their ninth straight in the series.
 
Inside the Box Score
• Kunwar led the Blue Jays with five goals and six points, while also drawing two ejections. His six points give him 153 for his career, moving him into a tie for 25th in school history. He also moves into 24th place with 124 career goals.
• Sullivan chipped in two goals and an assist to go with three drawn ejections. Junior Olin Shipstead tied his career high with three assists and classmate John Murphy added three points (1g, 2a). Junior Max Fleming made seven saves and had a steal in the cage.

• Hopkins will take on seventh-seeded Gannon on Saturday at 3:00 pm with a winner earning a spot in the fifth-place match.
