GILBERT, AZ – The Johns Hopkins field hockey team has placed four players on the 2019 Longstreth/NFHCA All-South Team it was announced today. Senior
Katie McErlean and sophomore
Abby Birk lead the way with first team honors and junior
Seema Sajjan and sophomore
Maddie Brown-Scherer earned second team honors.
Hopkins has now produced 61 NFHCA All-Region selections, including 11 under head coach
Jane Wells. The four all-region selections match the program record. This is the fifth time that JHU has had four all-region selections in one year.
McErlean earns all-region honors for the second time in her career and is just the 11
th player in program history to earn first team honors multiple times. A four-time All-Centennial Conference selection, she led the Blue Jays with a career-best 15 goals and 35 points. She also ranked third on the team in assists (5). McErlean finished her career ranked seventh in career points (81), sixth in goals (32) and tied for 14
th in assists (17). She also broke the school record with five penalty stroke goals this season and tied the career mark with six.
Birk grabs all-region honors for the second time in her career. She led the team and the Centennial and ranked sixth in the nation with 18 assists. She also ranked second in the conference in points (38) and tied for 10
th in goals (10). Her 18 assists are one shy of the school single-season record and she is tied for third in school history with 24 career assists.
Sajjan adds NFHCA All-South honors after earning her first career All-Centennial Conference accolade. She is a stalwart member of the Hopkins' defense, in particular the Blue Jays' corner defense. Hopkins ranked fourth in the Centennial Conference in goals against average (1.30) and 14th nationally in scoring margin (2.15).
Brown-Scherer earns her first all-region honor after picking up second team all-conference honors. She ranked second on the team with a career-best 12 goals and eight assists and ranked third with 32 points. Brown-Scherer was tied for fifth in the Centennial in goals, tied for third in assists and fourth in assists.
