Joe Cartledge and
Austin Gu have been selected for the 2019 NCAA Doubles Championship it was announced Wednesday night. In addition, sophomore
Vishnu Joshi is the first alternate for the singles championship.
For Cartledge, this is his second selection for the doubles championship while this is the first for Gu. The duo is the ninth different doubles team from Hopkins to be selected for the championship. Cartledge is the seventh player in program history to be selected twice.
Cartledge and Gu are 13-5 on the season, including a 9-3 record at number one doubles. The pair is ranked fourth in the Atlantic South by the ITA. They are 4-1 against regionally ranked opponents and 1-1 against nationally ranked opponents. Joshi is 10-5 this season, with a 7-2 mark at first singles. He is 4-2 against regionally ranked foes and is ranked third in the region.
For the individual championships, the national committee selected seven singles players and three doubles teams from each of the four regions. Additionally, the committee selected the remaining four singles players and four doubles team berths from a national at-large pool. The individual championships consist of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams.
The selection of teams and individuals for the championships is based on won-lost record, strength of schedule and eligibility and availability of student-athletes. Any singles player or doubles team that scratches from the tournament will be replaced in sequential order by the published list of alternates.
The team championship will take place May 20-22, while the individual championships will be May 24-26, both at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, MI. The draw for the individual championship will be done by the men's tennis committee and will be released on May 23.
