BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins held off an upset-minded Christopher Newport in a 4-3 win Sunday afternoon. The eighth-ranked Blue Jays improve to 12-5 on the season while the 27
th-ranked Captains fall to 9-7.
Christopher Newport grabbed the doubles' point with wins at two and three. But Hopkins rallied to win four of the six singles matches to take the win.
Rainer Christiansen and Nathan Russell picked up the first win of the day with a 6-3 win at three doubles over
Dylan Blenkiron and
Brian Yi.
Allen Gong and
Chakor Rajendra answered with a 6-1 win versus Barrett Foster and Vincent Truong at one. Sam Halvorsen and Gabe Smith took the doubles' point for the Captains when they edged
Mukundh Boopathi and
Pranav Gadiraju, 7-6, at two.
Boopathi tied the match at one with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Christiansen at five singles. Gong then put the Blue Jays on top with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Truong at one. Blenkiron pushed Hopkins' lead to 3-1 when he beat Foster 6-3, 6-1 at three. Russell cut the Jays' lead in half with a tight 6-4, 7-5 win over Rajendra at two. Once again, it was
Joshua Kim clinching the win for JHU as he beat Ivan Ceric 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 at six. Smith closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 win over
Jason Li at four to make it a 4-3 match.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, April 25 with matches against Stevenson and Haverford at Stevenson.
Notes: Rajendra moved into a tie for 22
nd in program history with his 49
th career doubles win.
