Polansky Named to Second Team Google Cloud Academic All-America

AUSTIN, TX – Johns Hopkins men's fencing senior Solomon Polansky has been named to the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-American At-Large Second Team, selected by CoSIDA. This is his first career selection and the first for the men's fencing team since 2015-16. In addition, he is the only fencer, male or female, in Division III, and is one of just two across all NCAA divisions to be named to the Academic All-America teams.

To be nominated for the Google Cloud Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 or higher cumulative grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve. The Men's At-Large Team consists of athletes from the following sports: fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.

A two-time captain of the fencing team, Polansky graduated in May with a degree in mechanical engineering. He is interning at BAE Systems, with the Fluid and Thermal Sciences group, and will return to Hopkins in the fall to complete his Masters in Mechanical Engineering.

Polansky was the recipient of both the Robert G. Gerstmyer and Charles A. Miller Awards through the Johns Hopkins Department of Mechanical Engineering. He was also a teaching assistant for two semesters for "Introduction to Mechanical Engineering Design and CAD" and one semester of "Freshman Mechanical Engineering Lab". He was a summer intern for BAE Systems, Daikin Applied and the Minneapolis Federal Reserve.

Polansky led the Foil squad and the entire team in wins (75) this season and ranks 11th in JHU history with 313 career Foil wins. He finished in the top-25 at the NCAA Regional three times and boasts three top-10, including two top-three finishes, at the MACFA Championships. Polansky led the Blue Jays to 73 wins, two MACFA titles and two runner-up finishes in his career. In addition, he was a volunteer fencing coach at the Homewood and Twin Cities Fencing Clubs. He was a Relay for Life team captain and a member of Johns Hopkins' Student-Athlete Advisory Club.
