• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team faced a tough field at the Temple Invitational, taking on four teams ranked in the top-10. Hopkins picked up a 16-11 win over Stevens.
 
How it Happened
• Hopkins lost a tough opening match against ninth-ranked Penn State. The Blue Jay Epee squad grabbed an 8-1 win, led by senior Tiger Gao and freshman Jeffrey Wang, who won three bouts each. The Foil squad lost a close 5-4 match with sophomore Noah Park winning a pair.
• The Blue Jays then lost to the seventh-ranked Red Storm. Freshman David DeScherer led the Sabre squad (3-6) with two wins. Gao did the same for the Epee squad (3-6).
• JHU rebounded with a 16-11 win over Stevens, which is receiving votes in the latest poll. The Sabre squad won 6-3, as sophomore Eryk Kokosinski and freshman Sachin Mehta combined for all six wins. The Epee squad won by the same score, led by Gao and his three wins. The Foil squad dropped a close 5-4 decision, with junior Eashan Gupta winning both of his bouts.
• Hopkins then lost to sixth-ranked Princeton, with the Tigers sweeping the three weapons. Mehta won two of his bouts as the Sabre squad lost a close 5-4 match. Gao again won two bouts to lead the Epee squad (3-6).
• The Blue Jays closed out the day with a loss to the fourth-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions. Kokosinski won two of three bouts to lead the Sabre squad (3-6), while sophomore Matthew Jacobs did the same for the Foil squad (3-6).
 
What it Means
• Gao moved into 12th place, among all weapons, in school history with 253 career wins.
