Box Score 3 FREDERICKSBURG, VA – Johns Hopkins sophomore
Thomas Yu did not drop a set in the ITA Southeast Regional to win the 2021 singles championship. Yu and his twin brother, James, also advanced to the semifinals in the championship doubles draw.
Thomas Yu's singles title is just the fourth in program history and the first 2014. He earns ITA All-America honors with the win and a bid to the 2021 ITA Cup in Rome, GA. The ITA Cup is scheduled for October 14-17 at the Rome Tennis Center.
Sophomore
Daniel Ardila and
Rohan Reddy also advanced to the semifinals in the championship doubles draw. In singles, Reddy made it to the quarterfinals while freshman
Marco Azar made it to the round of 32. Azar and junior
Andrew Tran advanced to the round of 16 in the championship doubles draw.
Thomas Yu, seeded fifth, opened the tournament with an easy 6-1, 6-0 win over Levi Vigdorchuk (Lynchburg). He then advanced to the round of 16 with a walkover. In the quarterfinals,
Thomas Yu then beat ninth-seeded Rishi Charan-Shankar (Mary Washington) 6-4, 6-0. He followed that with a 66-3, 6-4 victory in the quarterfinals over third-seeded Charley Force (Swarthmore).
Thomas Yu advanced to the finals with a walkover win over top-seeded Marcos Dias (Southern Virginia). He then cruised to the title by beating second-seeded Moses Hutchinson (Mary Washington) 6-1, 6-1.
Reddy was seeded fourth in the championship singles draw and beat Felix Fevc (Virginia Wesleyan) in the first round. He then defeated Will Kistler (Washington & Lee) 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the round of 16. Reddy followed that with a 6-4, 6-2 win over ninth-seeded Alec Strause (Christopher Newport). His run ended in the quarterfinals with a tough three-set loss to ninth-seeded Kaiwen Jiang (Swarthmore).
Azar earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Connor Coleman (Washington & Lee) in his first-round match. He then fell to fifth-seeded Brandon Aprill (Carnegie Mellon) in three sets in the round of 32. Tran dropped his first-round match 6-0, 6-2 to ninth-seeded Rushil Patel (Swarthmore). In the consolation draw, he beat Brian Kane (Goucher) 6-1, 6-1 and then lost to Mikhail Grebenkin (Carnegie Mellon) in three sets.
Ardilla lost in the opening round to ninth-seeded William Wang (Carnegie Mellon) 7-6 (4), 6-2. In the consolation draw, he beat Rufus Nurminen (Averett) 6-4, 6-2 and then withdrew.
James Yu, seeded ninth, lost his first match 6-1, 6-4 to Evan Brady (Washington & Lee). He beat Tristan Steffe (Franklin & Marshall) 6-1, 6-1 in the consolation draw and then withdrew.
In doubles, Yu and Yu were seeded third in the draw and had a first-round bye. The pair then beat sixth-seeded Eli Hirshberg and Bobby Neuner 8-2 to advance to the round of 16. Yu and Yu defeated Grant Dill and Max Pogorelov (Swarthmore) 8-3. In the quarterfinals, the Blue Jay duo defeated fifth-seeded Charan-Shankar and Nick Spera 8-2. Their run ended in the semifinals with an 8-3 loss to Cole Tecce and Peter Leese (Mary Washington).
On the bottom half of the doubles draw, Ardila and Reddy were seeded fifth and had a first-round bye. The pair beat Karl Hoegstedt and Ryohei Kawai (Washington College) 8-5 to move to the round of 16. Ardila and Reddy then won 8-2 over ninth-seeded Wang and Wernink (Carnegie Mellon). In the quarters, the duo won a hard-fought 8-7 (6) decision over Benton Drake and Tanner Bassett (Southern Virginia). Ardila and Reddy then lost to eventual champion Hutchinson and Andrew Watson (Mary Washington) 8-5.
