Johns Hopkins Returns to Action at Temple; Tops Lafayette

• The Short Story: After 364 days, the Johns Hopkins women's fencing team returned to action with three matches at Temple. JHU beat Lafayette but suffered losses to Temple and NJIT.
 
How it Happened
• Hopkins took on host Temple in its first meet, falling 20-7. The Owls took both the Sabre (9-0) and Epee (7-2) while the Blue Jays won the Foil 5-4. Senior Shaina Morris and freshman Diya Kulkarni each won a bout for Hopkins in the Epee, including Kulkarni's first career win. The Foil squad was led by junior Miya Herman and sophomore Alexandra McDonald, who won two bouts each. McDonald clinched the win for the Blue Jays with a win in her third bout.
• JHU rebounded with an 18-9 win over Lafayette, including wins in the Epee (8-1) and Foil (9-0). Freshman Sanya Bawa earned the Blue Jays' lone win, her first career win, in the Sabre (1-8). Kulkarni and Morris each won all three of their bouts in the Epee, while freshman Maya Zhang picked up her first career win. And in the Foil, Herman, McDonald and junior Erika Wong combined for all nine wins.
• Hopkins then lost to NJIT in the final round of the day, with the Blue Jays picking up a win in the Foil (6-3). Junior Cherlin Zhu earned JHU's win in the Sabre (1-8), while Zhang earned the Blue Jays' only win in the Epee. Herman, McDonald and Wong each won two bouts to for the Foil squad.
 
What it Means
• Hopkins falls to 3-43 against Temple and moves to 5-0 against Lafayette. JHU suffered its first-ever loss to NJIT, falling to 14-1 all-time.
• Herman moves into 11th place in school history with 120 career Foil wins, while Wong now ranks 13th with 111 wins.
