Box Score 3 VILLANOVA, PA – The Johns Hopkins men's tennis team opened the fall portion of its schedule at the 2021 Villanova Invitational last weekend. Sophomores
Daniel Ardila and
Rohan Reddy led the Blue Jays with a runner-up finish in the Blue Draw.
Ardila and Reddy kicked off the weekend with a 3-0 win over Colgate's Jack Selati and Rohan Gupta. The JHU pair won the doubles match, 7-5. Reddy then beat Selati 6-4, 6-3 and Ardila beat Gupta, 8-5, in singles play. In the quarterfinals, Ardila and Reddy beat Nathan Perrone and Eshan Kanetkar of Saint Joseph's 3-0. The Blue Jay pair won 6-4 in doubles. Ardila came from behind to beat Kanetkar 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (5) in singles and Reddy won his match by default.
In the semifinals, Ardila and Reddy beat Swarthmore's Charley Force and Rushil Patel, 2-1. Ardila and Reddy won in doubles, 7-5, to grab the early lead. Ardila earned a 6-4, 7-6 (4) win over Patel while Force took a close three-setter over Reddy 7-6 (5), 4-6, 1-0 (10). The Hopkins duo then lost in the finals to Lehigh's Zack Elliott and Mark Blekhman, 2-1. Ardila and Reddy once again won in doubles, 6-4. Elliott then beat Reddy 6-2, 7-6 )5) and Blekhman beat Ardila 7-5, 6-0 in singles to earn the win.
The Yus opened the weekend with a 2-1 win over Nickolas Frisk and Alp Sentay of Saint Joseph's to advance to the quarterfinals. The Blue Jay duo won 7-5 in doubles.
James Yu then beat Sentay 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10) in singles while Frisk beat
Thomas Yu 6-3, 7-6 (4). The Yus then beat Alex Kim and Ryan Nguyen of Villanova, 2-1, to move into the semifinals. The Hopkins pair won the doubles match, 6-2. Thomas then defeated Kim 7-5, 6-2 and Nguyen beat James 6-4, 7-6 (3).
In the semifinals versus Elliott and Blekhman, Hopkins was forced to default the doubles match and Thomas' singles match due to injury. Blekhman won his singles match over James, 8-4, and the Blue Jays moved into third-place match. The Yus wrapped up the weekend with a fourth-place finish. They beat Force and Patel, 6-2, in doubles. Force then beat Thomas, 8-2, and Patel beat James, 8-6, as the Garnet won the match 2-1.
In the White Draw, juniors
Alexander Kernagis and
Andrew Tran dropped their first match, 2-1, to Nassim Fenjiro and Alex MacNeil of Saint Joseph's. The Hawks pair won the doubles match, 7-5. Fenjiro then beat Tran 6-0, 6-3 in singles while Kernagis defeated MacNeil, 8-6. The Blue Jay pair then lost to Edik Pribitkin and Matt Cardano of Loyola, 2-1, in the consolation draw. The Greyhounds won the doubles match, 6-2. Tran followed with an 8-3 win over Pribitkin in singles, while Cardano defeated Kernagis 6-3, 6-1.
Continuing in the consolation draw, Kernagis and Tran beat Loyola's Oliver Davey and Colin Corsini, 3-0. The Blue Jays won in doubles, 7-5. In singles, Tran beat Davey, 8-5, and Kernagis beat Corsini 9-7. Kernagis and Tran then faced teammates
Nick Charanjiva and
Ryan Hellinger in the 13
th place match. Tran and Kernagis won the doubles match, 7-5, and the singles matches were not played.
Charanjiva and Hellinger opened the weekend with a 2-1 loss to Gary Fishkin and Andrew Nakhjavan of Leigh. The Blue Jays won the doubles match, 7-6 (5). Fishkin came from behind to beat Hellinger 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (3) in singles and Nakhajan beat Charanjiva 6-4, 6-4. In the consolation draw, Hellinger and Charanjiva lost 2-1 to Villanova's Will Gatti and Collin Klum. The Wildcats won the doubles match, 7-5. In singles, Charanjiva prevailed in three sets 7-6 (4), 3-6, 1-0 (5) while Gatti defeated Hellinger 3-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (3). Charanjiva and Hellinger then earned a bye into the 13
th place match, where they would meet their teammates.
Hopkins returns to action next weekend (September 24-26) at the Loyola Invitational.
