Blue Jays Drop Three Tight Centennial Duals

Roybal, Osborne Go 3-0 to Lead Blue Jays

COLLEGEVILLE, PA – The Johns Hopkins wrestling team dropped a trio of tight Centennial Conference dual meets on Saturday afternoon at Ursinus.  The Blue Jays fell to Muhlenberg, 29-17, to open the day and later fell to host Ursinus (21-18) and the Merchant Marine Academy (23-21).  The losses drop the Blue Jays to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in the Centennial.

Against the Mules
Muhlenberg jumped out to a 22-0 lead and held off a Blue Jay rally to grab the 29-17 victory.  After the Mules grabbed three pins and a major dec. in the first four bouts, the Blue Jays got back to wins by decision from Chris Roybal (157) and Jared Osborne (165) before Joe Paul added a technical fall at 174 and Grant Walnoha scored a 54-second pin of Hunter Gill at 184 to pull the Jays with in 22-17.  Muhlenberg iced the with win a major decision at 197 and a decision at 285.
 
Against the Bears
The Blue Jays rallied from an early 13-0 deficit to grab a 15-13 lead with three bouts to go, but he Bears won two of those three to grab the 21-18 victory.  Justin Valdoria got the Blue Jay rally started with an 8-6 win over Dante Monaco at 149 and Roybal and Osborne followed with decisions of their own.  Paul then picked up his 12th consecutive victory and gave the Blue Jays the 15-13 lead when he pinned Connor Fritsch in 4:41.   The Bears then picked up wins by technical fall at 184 and decision at 197 to grab a 21-15 lead; Hank Behaeghel's 7-3 win at 285 for the Blue Jays accounted for the 21-18 final score.
 
Against the Mariners
Johns Hopkins won four of the first six bouts to grab an 18-10 lead before the Merchant Marine Academy rallied for the win.  A Brent Lorin win by forfeit at 125, decisions by Valdoria and Osborne and a first-period pin for Roybal helped the Blue Jays to the eight-point lead.  In the featured match of the day, it was Merchant Marine's Dominick Esposito earning an escape at the buzzer in the third period and then scoring a takedown in overtime to edge Paul, 6-4.  The Mariners grabbed a major decision and pin at 184 and 197, respectively, to turn the 18-13 deficit into a 23-18 lead before Behaeghel scored a 3-0 victory at 285 to account for the 23-21 final score.
 
Notes of Interest
Paul tied Ricky Cavallo's single-season school record with his eighth technical fall of the season.  Roybal and Osborne both went 3-0 on the day to lead the way for the Blue Jays, who also got a 2-0 performance from Behaeghel and 2-1 showings from Paul and Valdoria.  Roybal has won eight of his last 10.  The win for Lorin was the 40th of his career.
 
What's Next
The Blue Jays will return to action on Friday, February 4 when they welcome Washington & Lee to Goldfarb Gymnasium (pm).  Johns Hopkins will honor its seniors prior to the match.
