LANCASTER, PA – Johns Hopkins senior
Dominick Reyes was named the Centennial Conference Wrestler-of-the-Year for the second time and six Blue Jays earned All-Centennial honors as the league announced its all-conference teams and special award winners today.
Â
Reyes becomes the first individual to twice be selected as the CC's Wrestler-of-the-Year. This is the 10
th year the award has been presented as it debuted in 2012; he joins Paul Bewak (2013) as Johns Hopkins' recipients of the league's top honor.
Â
In addition to collecting his second straight Wrestler-of-the-Year honor, Reyes also earned First Team All-Centennial honors after capturing his second straight CC title at 165 pounds. Conference champions are named to the first team, while runners-up earn honorable mention status. A pair of Blue Jays,
Brent Lorin (133) and
Joe Paul (174), joined Reyes on the first team, while
Justin Valdoria (149),
Chris Roybal (157) and
Hank Behaeghel (285) earned honorable mention honors.
Â
In addition earning First Team All-Centennial, Paul was also named to the league's All-Sportsmanship Team.
Â
Reyes cruised to his second straight CC title at last week's conference championships with wins by fall, technical fall and major decision. The three wins boosted his season record to 19-0 and extended his school-record winning streak to 43 matches dating back to the 2019-20 season. Reyes is currently ranked third in the nation.
Â
Lorin bumped up from 125 to 133 pounds late in the season and pulled off a stunning run to his first individual conference championship. After earning a first-round bye, Lorin scored a 17-7 major decision over top-seeded Luke Kowalski of Gettysburg before pinning second-seeded Romeo Rodriguez in the first period of the title bout. Lorin is now 23-13 on the year and ranks second on the team with seven pins.
Â
Paul also won his first Centennial title to land a spot on the first team. After earning a bye in the quarterfinals, he scored a second-period pin in the semifinals and topped McDaniel's Michael Bromley, 3-1, in a hard-fought match to win the championship. Paul has a team-best 32 wins on the year (32-7) with 17 bonus-point wins to his credit. His eight technical falls are currently tied for the JHU single-season record.
Â
Valdoria made a run to the title bout in a wide-open weight class to grab honorable mention honors. He picked up a win by major decision in the quarterfinals and added a 6-3 win over Merchant Marine's Austin Manning in the semifinals to advance to the finals. There, he dropped a 10-6 decision to Gettysburg's Eric Mougalian. Valdoria is now 6-5 on the year.
Â
Roybal ran his season record to 17-8 with his run to the 157-pound title bout at the CC Championships. The number three seed, Roybal opened with a 14-4 major decision of McDaniel's Xavier Howard in the quarterfinals and topped second-seeded Shawn Marchesano of Ursinus, 8-3, in the semifinals. He then fell to ninth-ranked Ryan Luth of Washington & Lee in the championship bout
Â
Behaeghel improved to 16-8 on the year with a team-best nine pins after working his way to the title bout for the first time in his career. He needed just 21 seconds to pin Gettysburg's Jon Stix and added a 10-5 come-from-behind win over Malcolm Hunt of Ursinus in the semifinals. In the title match, he suffered an injury and was forced to withdraw. He is the first Johns Hopkins heavyweight to advance to the CC final since 2004.
Â
Johns Hopkins will return to action on February 26-27 when the Blue Jays travel to Elizabethtown for the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships.
