Johns Hopkins Holds Off #17 Carnegie Mellon, 5-4

• The Short Story: The 12th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team jumped out to a 5-0 lead in a 5-4 win over 17th-ranked Carnegie Mellon Sunday afternoon.
 
How it Happened
• The Blue Jays grabbed a 3-0 lead with a sweep of the doubles. Freshman Marco Azar and sophomore Thomas Yu earned the first point of the match with an 8-2 win at third over Arjan Bedi and Michael Fourchy. Graduate student Vishnu Joshi and junior Alexander Kernagis then beat Brandon Aprill and Derek Wong 8-5 at second. Sophomores Daniel Ardila and Rohan Reddy completed the sweep with an 8-6 win over Jonathan Nottingham and Matthew Poh at first.
• Joshi pushed Hopkins' lead to 4-0 when he defeated Nicholas Wernink 6-2, 6-2 at second singles. Yu then clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-2 win at first over Aprill.
• The Tartans would go on to win the final four singles matches, but it wasn't enough. Benny Zhou picked up Carnegie Mellon's first point of the match with a 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (9) win at third over senior Brian Wang. Nottingham then beat Azar 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (4) at sixth.
• Poh followed with a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win over Ardila at fifth. William Wang closed out the match with a 7-6 (3), 6-4 over junior Andrew Tran at third.
 
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 11-6 all-time against Carnegie Mellon and earns its first win over the Tartans since 2016.
• Joshi now ranks 15th in school history with 97 total wins. He also became the 11th player in program history with 50 career singles wins.
 
Up Next
• Hopkins returns to the court on Wednesday, April 6 as the Blue Jays host the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats. The Centennial Conference contest is slated for a 4:00 pm start.
