BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins placed five student-athletes on the 2021-22 CoSIDA Academic All-District II Men's Track & Field/Cross Country Team it was announced today.
Elias Boussouf,
Daniel Chen,
Matthew Kleiman,
Gavin McElhennon, and
Kevin Sommer. Johns Hopkins and Carnegie Mellon are the only Division III schools with five athletes represented on the All-District teams.
Since 2009-10, head coach
Bobby Van Allen's team has produced 33 Academic All-District selections with at least two in 12 of the last 14 years.
A recent graduate from Silver Spring, MD, Boussouf earned a 3.57 GPA while majoring in Biophysics. On the track, Boussouf was a nine-time Centennial Conference medalist, earning a gold medal, three silver medals, and five bronzes during his JHU career. Boussouf holds five top-10 marks in JHU history and is a regular on the Centennial Academic Honor Roll.
Outside of competition, Boussouf is a team representative for the JHU Student-Athlete Advising Committee (SAAC). He is a member of the Online Resources Working Group as well. Boussouf has worked with PinnacleCare as a Clinical Summary Specialist, at Curative as a Clinical Lab Shift Supervisor, and as an undergrad researcher for Dr. Michael Lim in the Hopkins School of Medicine.
Chen, a junior from Peoria, IL, is majoring in Molecular & Cellular Biology and has compiled a 3.98 GPA. Chen was a 2022 NCAA Indoor Qualifier in the Mile and has earned a pair of Centennial Conference medals (1 gold, 1 silver) in his time as a Blue Jay. Chen is the Freshman Indoor Mile record holder and has run two of the 10 fastest indoor mile times in program history. Chen is a USTFCCCA All-Academic choice and is a staple on the Centennial Academic Honor Roll.
The junior has spent time as a SoFlo Tutor for High School students and a volunteer at Unity Point Health Methodist Hospital. Chen has completed undergraduate research in the Sidhaye Lab at JHU School of Public Health.
Kleiman, a junior distance runner from Concord, MA, has a 3.65 GPA while majoring in Molecular & Cellular Biology. Already a decorated athlete at Hopkins, Kleiman earned All-America honors in March at NCAA DIII Indoors in the mile. Kleiman is a four-time Centennial medalist, bringing home a gold, two silvers, and a bronze. A captain on both the cross country and track teams, he is the indoor school record holder in the 1,000 and the mile. He was named 2022 Mid-Atlantic Indoor Track Athlete of the Year and was a 2021 All-Mid-Atlantic XC selection for his efforts.
Off the track, Kleiman is getting ready to start work as an Archaea Research Assistant for the Astrobiology Lab at Hopkins. Kleiman was a research assistant to Dr. Nadiya Zakamska in Astrophysics as well. The junior has also spent time as an Administrative Assistant in the JHU Athletic Center.
The youngest selection of the group, McElhennon is the lone sophomore selection for JHU. A Washington, DC native, McElhennon has a 3.86 GPA while double majoring in Economics and Applied Math & Statistics. McElhennon owns the indoor school record in the 3,000 and qualified for NCAA's in the event with a time of 8:18.26. He has earned three Centennial Conference medals and holds seven top-10 marks in JHU history.
Away from competition, McElhennon will start as a Finance & Strategy Intern at Finley Tech. He operates as the Vice President of Outreach for the Salant Investment Team and is also the Co-Founder/COO of the Rachel Carson Socially Responsible Investment Team.
Sommer, a 2020-21 Academic All-District selection, makes his second appearance on the team. A Califon, NJ native, is majoring in Environmental Health & Engineering and carries a 3.85 cumulative GPA. A nine-time medalist at the Centennial Championships, Sommer won a pair of gold medals at the 2021 outdoor championships with first-place finishes in the 110-meter hurdles and the 4x400 relay. Sommer is a team captain and the new school record holder in the 400m hurdles with a NCAA qualifying time of 53.20.
Sommer has previously worked as a hydrology student trainee with the United States Geological Survey and was a 2020 intern with NattoPharama. The junior is a member of Baila!, JHU's Latin Dance team and is the president-elect of the Environmental Engineering Student Group.
All five athletes will now go on the ballot for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.
