Johns Hopkins-Syracuse Men's Lacrosse Notes

Blue Jays, Orange Set for 61st All-Time Meeting

The Game
•  The 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins (4-3) men's lacrosse team makes the trip north to Syracuse to take on the Orange (3-3) for the 61st time in series history.  Faceoff is set for 4:02 pm with a live broadcast on ACC Network Extra.

When Last We Saw Them
•  Johns Hopkins had a two-game winning streak snapped as the Blue Jays fell to top-ranked Virginia, 18-13, at Homewood Field on Tuesday afternoon.
• Syracuse dropped its third straight as the Orange fell in overtime to ACC rival Duke, 14-13, in overtime at home on Sunday (March 5).

The Facts
•  This is the 136th season of Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse.  JHU first fielded a team in 1883.
•  Johns Hopkins enters this week's game with an all-time record of 1,008-367-15 (.731).
• Johns Hopkins is the only men's lacrosse program in the nation with 1,000 or more all-time victories.  The Blue Jays picked up the program's 1,000th victory with an 11-10 win over Loyola on February 19, 2022.
•  JHU owns 44 national championships with nine NCAA titles, 29 USILA titles and six ILA crowns to its credit.

Poll Position
•  Johns Hopkins is ranked 11th in this week's USILA Coaches Poll and 10th in the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll.
• Syracuse is listed as receiving votes in this week's USILA Coaches Poll and the Orange are also receiving votes in the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll.
• The Johns Hopkins Athletic Communications Office uses the USILA Poll when referencing JHU's official ranking at the time of a game.

500th Top 20 Ranking
• After being listed as receiving votes in the USILA Preseason Poll, the Blue Jays made the jump to ninth after starting the season at 2-0.
• The number nine ranking marked the 500th time in school history that JHU has appeared in the top 20 of the USILA Poll.
• The USILA Poll debuted in 1973 and this week's poll is the 522nd issued; JHU's #11 ranking this week means the Blue Jays have appeared in 503 of the 522 polls.

The Schedule - Just Sayin'
•  This week's game against Syracuse will mark just the second Johns Hopkins' game this season (in eight) against a team not ranked in the top 20 in the nation at the time of the game.
• In all, 10 of JHU's 15 opponents on the 2023 schedule are ranked in the top 20 this week and six of those 10 are ranked in the top 10.

Series History
•  This week's game will be the 61st game in a series that dates to a 4-4 tie between the two teams in 1921.
• JHU holds a slim 31-28-1 advantage in the head-to-head matchups.
• Since 2012, the visiting team has won four of 10 games played on campus (one neutral site game in that time ... teams also did not meet in 2021).
•  A complete series history can be found on page 16.

Balanced Scoring
•  Johns Hopkins got goals from nine different players and points from 11 different players in the 12-7 season-opening win at Jacksonville and then had six different goal-scorers and nine players notch at least one point in the win over Georgetown.  That balance was also on display in the 15-14 win over St. Joseph's (7 goal-scorers / 9 players with a point)and the 18-13 loss to Virginia (7 goal-scorers / 11 players with a point).
• The Blue Jays' balanced scoring sheet includes 10 players with three or more goals and 11 with four or more points.
• Leading the way for the Jays thus far are Jacob Angelus (6g, 18a), Garrett Degnon (14g, 1a), Brendan Grimes (8g, 6a), Matt Collison (13g, 1a),  Russell Melendez (6g, 5a), Dylan Bauer (6g, 3a) and Johnathan Peshko (7g, 1a) and  who all have at least eight points thus far.

Three With Hat Tricks Against Utah, Virginia
•  Johns Hopkins got three goals from three different players in the 12-8 win against Utah and in the 18-13 loss to Virginia.
• Senior Ian Krampf, junior Brendan Grimes and freshman Matt Collison all scored three times against the Utes, while Krampf, Collison and graduate student Garrett Degnon all scored three times against the Cavaliers.
• Prior to these two instances, the last time Johns Hopkins has had three players with a hat trick in the same game was on February 11, 2022, when Joey Epstein (6), Garrett Degnon (4) and Grimes (3) all had three+ goals at Towson.

19 Straight for Degnon
•  Graduate student attackman Garrett Degnon scored four goals in the 15-14 win over St. Joseph's, came back with three against top-ranked Virginia and now leads the team in goals (14) despite missing one game.
• The three-goal effort against the Cavaliers pushed his goal-scoring streak to 19 games dating back to February 19, 2022, when he scored once in an 11-10 win over Loyola. The streak is currently the sixth longest active streak in the nation.
• During his 19-game goal-scoring run, Degnon has scored 49 goals and has 14 multi-goal games and nine games with 3+ goals to his credit.
• Degnon's 19-game run is also the longest by a Johns Hopkins player since Kyle Marr scored at least one goal in 19 straight games from early in the 2018 season through early in the 2019 season.
• The last 20-game-plus goal-scoring streak by a Johns Hopkins player was a school-record-tying 37-game run by Ryan Brown that ran from 2013-16.

I'm Honored
•  Matt Collison was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week after netting his first career hat trick in the recent 12-8 win over Utah and he followed that with a two-goal, one-assist effort in the 15-14 win over #13 St. Joe's that earned him the honor for a second consecutive week.
• Including his three-goal outburst against top-ranked Virginia, Collison now has 13 goals and one assist on the year, including 12 goals and one assist in the last five games.
• With five straight multi-goal games to his credit, he is the first Blue Jay freshman middie to score two or more goals in five straight games in at least 20 years. Prior to Collison's current run of five straight games with 2+ goals,  Paul Rabil was the last JHU freshman middie to even have a four-game run of two or more goals (2005).

Offensive Notes of Interest
• Since the start of the 2022 season, the Blue Jays are 10-2 when they score 11 or more goals.
• In 28 quarters this season, the Blue Jays have scored two or more goals in 20 quarters and four or more in 13 quarters.

Extra-Extra
• The Johns Hopkins extra-man unit has converted on 8-of-18 (.444) attempts this season, but that hardly tells the story.
• After going 0-for-7 in the first four games of the season, the Blue Jays have converted on 8-of-11 (.727) chances in the last three games.
• Entering this week's game at Syracuse, the Blue Jays rank 23rd in the nation in extra-man offense.

Defensive Notes of Interest
•  JHU allowed just 12 extra-man goals (on 35 chances) in 2022.  The 12 EMO goals allowed are the fewest by a Blue Jay team since 2016, when Hopkins allowed just 11 (of 33 chances).
• Through seven games this season, the opposition has cashed in on 6-of-18 (.333) chances; Johns Hopkins ranks 27th in the nation in man-down defense with a 66.7% kill rate.
• Johns Hopkins was 6-0 last season and is 11-0 under head coach Peter Milliman and defensive coordinator Jamison Koesterer when holding the opposition to 10 goals or less.

Non-Offensive Scoring
• Through seven games, Johns Hopkins has gotten 13 points (7g, 6a) from non-offensive players, an average of one goal and nearly two points per game.
• The Blue Jays got five points (2g, 3a) from non-offensive players against top-ranked Virginia as SSDMs Hunter Jaronski and Jakson Raposo both scored goals with faceoff specialists Matt Narewski and Logan Callahan and goalie Tim Marcille grabbing assists.
• Last season, the Blue Jays got 14 goals and eight assists for 22 points from non-offensive players.
