th-ranked Johns Hopkins, 5-2, Saturday afternoon in the Centennial Conference Championship match. The Blue Jays fall to 18-4 on the season and see their eight-match win streak snapped. The Garnet improve to 14-3 and wins their first CC Tournament title.
Hopkins took the first point of the match when
Daniel Ardila and
Jonathan Zhang beat Max Lindstrom and Rushil Patel, 8-4, at second doubles.
George Jiang and
Joe DeMarco then pushed the lead to two with an 8-6 win over Max Pogorelov and Andres Fente at third. Swarthmore answered at first doubles as Michael Melnikov and Purushotham Koduri edged
James Yu and
Thomas Yu, 8-7 (3) to make it 2-1.
Lindstrom then tied the match with a 6-0, 6-3 win over
Mason Liu at third singles. Melnikov gave the Garnet the lead when he defeated
Thomas Yu 6-2, 6-4 at first. Lalith Suresh made it a 4-2 match with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Ardila at fourth. Charley Force then clinched the win for the home team as he won a close 7-6 (2), 6-4 match at second over Zhang.
The loss snaps the Blue Jays' streak of 14 straight Centennial Conference Tournament titles. JHU now awaits a possible at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. The field is set to be announced on Monday, May 1 by 12:00 pm.
