BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins Associate Vice Provost for Student Affairs, Director of Athletics and Recreation
Jennifer S. Baker announced today that the University has signed men's lacrosse coach
Peter Milliman to a contract extension. While terms of the agreement were not announced, the multi-year extension will commence at the conclusion of the 2024 season.
Â
"It has been a pleasure to watch Coach Milliman advance and elevate our men's lacrosse program during his tenure thus far," Baker noted. "He has assembled a talented staff, recruited exceptional student-athletes who excel on the field, in the classroom, and in the community, and has deepened a strong culture predicated upon hard work and selflessness. I am excited to watch our Blue Jays compete for championships in the future under his continued tutelage, mentorship, and leadership."
Â
Milliman recently completed his third season at Johns Hopkins and guided the 2023 team to a 12-6 record, a share of the Big Ten regular season title, a trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals and a final national ranking of fifth.Â
Â
Playing one of the most difficult schedules in the nation, the Blue Jays scored seven victories against nationally ranked teams, topped Maryland, 12-11, to claim The Rivalry Trophy and tied a program record for goals in an NCAA Tournament game with a 22-goal outburst in a first-round win over Bryant at Homewood Field.
Â
"I am honored to serve this program as the head coach and work with such an incredible group of hard-working young men," Milliman stated. "I would like to thank Jennifer Baker, President Daniels, Vice Provost Rachelle Hernandez and the entire administration for their support and belief in the vision we have for the men's lacrosse program. Most importantly, I would like to thank the incredible staff that I am honored to work with every day.  Their pursuit of excellence as educators and leaders serves as an inspiration to the entire team, including me."
Â
In addition to the on-field success the 2023 team enjoyed, Johns Hopkins produced five USILA All-Americans, four players earned All-Big Ten honors, 34 grabbed Academic All-Big Ten honors and nine were named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars. A program-record five Blue Jays also earned USILA Scholar All-America honors, the second-most of any team in the nation.
Â
Among Milliman's signature off-field initiatives since taking over in 2020 was the spearheading of a program partnership with Team IMPACT. The Blue Jays' adopted teammate, Kyle Skakle, has been a fixture at Johns Hopkins practices and games (home and away) since his official signing with the program in December 2021. Team IMPACT matches children facing serious illness and disability with college sports teams, creating a long-term, life-changing experience for everyone involved.
