BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse coach
Peter Milliman announced today
Jamison Koesterer, who has served as the Blue Jay Defensive Coordinator for the last four seasons, has been promoted to Associate Head Coach. Kosterer, a 2007 Johns Hopkins graduate who also spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons on the Blue Jay coaching staff before returning for the 2021 season, has directed a Johns Hopkins defense that has ranked among the nation's best in recent years.
Â
"Jamison's passion for Johns Hopkins University and the Blue Jay men's lacrosse program is unmatched," Milliman stated. "He is a tireless worker and recruiter with an attention to detail that is evident to our staff, the men on our team and members of our administration. The relationships he has built with the current and former players he has coached, his former Blue Jay teammates and every member of the Johns Hopkins lacrosse family are genuine and impactful. Jamison's standard of what it means to represent our lacrosse program is unwavering and I am thrilled to announce his well-deserved promotion to Associate Head Coach."
Â
Koesterer's defensive units have been at the heart of the success the Blue Jays have enjoyed since his return, specifically in the last two seasons. During the 2023 and 2024 seasons, Johns Hopkins posted a combined record of 23-11, including a 9-1 mark in Big Ten regular season play, advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals twice, claimed a share of the 2023 Big Ten regular season title and won the 2024 Big Ten regular season title outright.
Â
"First and foremost, I would like to thank Director of Athletics Jennifer Baker and Head Coach
Peter Milliman for their guidance and support," Koesterer noted. "To our players - current and past - this promotion is a direct reflection of the sacrifice and commitment that each of you has poured into this program. Directing our defense is just a small part of my job; while the on-field results appear rewarding, it has been my honor to form relationships and grow alongside some of the finest young men and student-athletes in the world. To everyone who knows what it means to wear the Black and Blue, thank you."
Â
Johns Hopkins finished seventh in the nation – and first in the Big Ten - in scoring defense in 2024 (9.63) and a set a program record for caused turnovers per game (8.25). Two Johns Hopkins defensemen and one short stick defensive midfielder earned All-America honors in 2024, when the Blue Jays held 11 of 16 opponents to 10 goals or less and 15 of 16 were held under their season scoring average. The 9.63 goals allowed per game in 2024 were the fewest by Johns Hopkins since 2014.
Â
The success of the 2024 Blue Jay defense under Koesterer's guidance came one year after Johns Hopkins finished 21
st nationally in scoring defense (11.06), set a school-record with 135 caused turnovers and had one defenseman and one short stick defensive midfielder earn All-America honors.
Â
The top four single-season averages for caused turnovers per game in Blue Jay history have come in the four seasons under Koesterer's guidance, while the top three single-season caused turnover totals have come in the last three seasons.
Â
In addition to his time as the volunteer assistant at Johns Hopkins in 2011 and 2012, Koesterer spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Ohio State (2013-16) and four as an assistant at UMBC (2017-20). Milliman named him the Blue Jay Defensive Coordinator on May 8, 2020.
Â
Koesterer played at Johns Hopkins from 2004-07 and was a member of the Blue Jays' national championship teams in 2005 and 2007. He scored seven goals and added 12 assists and 101 ground balls during his career. He also won 176-of-318 (.553) career faceoffs and helped guide the Blue Jays to a 51-11 record.
