Box Score ANNAPOLIS, MD – Johns Hopkins fell to George Washington, 12-8, in the opening round of the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Championship. The Blue Jays fall to 11-22 on the season and will take on Mount St. Mary's in consolation bracket.
GW grabbed an early 2-0 lead before Hopkins got on the board with an even strength goal from
Quint Steffey. The Revolutionaries answered with a pair of goals in a 46-second span to push out to a 4-1 lead at the 3:40-mark.
Alec Baker cut the deficit to two with a six-on-five goal at 3:03. Yam Kabakov scored a five-meter goal to make it a 5-2 game at the end of one.
Steffey opened the second with his second of the night to cut the deficit back to two. GW responded with a 5-0 run to push out to a 10-3 lead with 4:52 to play in the third.
Phillip Long scored less than a minute later to spark a three-goal run that saw the Blue Jays trim the deficit to four less than two minutes later. That's as close as Hopkins could get as the teams traded goals over the final 10 minutes of the game.
Baker led the Blue Jays with a hat trick while Steffey had a pair.
Hopkins will take on Mount St. Mary's at 2:30 pm on Saturday in Annapolis. The Blue Jays and the Mount split their season series.
