ROSEMONT, IL – Johns Hopkins graduate student
Beaudan Szuluk has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week it was announced by the league today. Szuluk helped the Blue Jays to a 15-11 win over 15th-ranked Michigan last Saturday in their only game of the week.
This is the second time this season and the second time in his career that Szuluk has been honored as the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week as he previously was honored after the Blue Jays topped Virginia in early March. This is also the 12th time a Hopkins player has earned the award since the league added men's lacrosse in 2015 and the third time a Blue Jay has been honored this season.
Szuluk collected five ground balls and had three caused turnovers in the win over the Wolverines. The five GBs and three CTs were both one shy of his career high and he helped the Blue Jays hold Michigan scoreless for stretches of 12:50 and 15:46 in the victory. After allowing four goals in the first quarter, the Johns Hopkins defense held the Wolverines to just seven over the final 45 minutes and the Blue Jays outscored the Wolverines 12-7 over that time; Michigan entered the game averaging more than 14 goals per game.
In 10 games this season, Szuluk has 24 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers to his credit. He leads the team in caused turnovers and ranks third in ground balls. In his career, Szuluk has played in 52 games with 39 starts and has 78 ground balls and 61 caused turnovers to his credit – he ranks third in school history with his 61 caused turnovers and is just four shy of Tucker Durkin's career record of 65.
Johns Hopkins (7-3, 2-0 B1G) will return to action on Saturday, April 6 when the Blue Jays welcome Penn State (7-2, 1-1 B1G) to Homewood Field (2 pm / ESPNU).
