ALLENTOWN, PA – The Johns Hopkins men's track & field team sits atop the Centennial Conference Championship standings after Day 1, using a number of first-place finishes as well as a meet record from
Matthew Kelly to take the early lead.
Friday kicked off with the first half of the meet's decathlon events in which
James Reilly and
Owen Takahashi put together a pair of dominant performances to enter Day 2 in first and second respectively. Reilly took wins in the long jump, 100 and 400 with second-place finishes in the shot put and high jump — good for a meet best 3242 points — while Takahashi earned podiums in a trio of events before winning the 400 to climb to 2944 points.
The Blue Jays missed out on points in the hammer throw despite
Leo Anderson and
Ryan Braga both setting personal best marks of 38.53 and 38.17 respectively, but the drought was short-lived with
Peter Lim earning the Blue Jays their first official win of the weekend.
The junior failed on his first attempt at 3.98, but was perfect from there all the way to a personal-best height of 4.50 meters to take home first. Reilly and
Aidan Rothstein also scored vital points in the event, finishing in fifth (3.98 meters) and seventh (3.83 meters) respectively.
The majority of the Jays' Day 1 points came from the 10,000 in which Kelly,
Jonas Larson,
Thomas Li,
Sean Enright and
Nash Minor combined to secure Hopkins 24 of its 40 points. Kelly was the hero in Friday's final event, taking home first and setting a new meet record with his time of 30:26.11. The sophomore was then followed by Larson (3
rd – 30:54.11), Li (5
th – 31:00.11), Enright (6
