Blue Jays Break Five Pool Records in Win at Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, PA – Johns Hopkins won eight of 14 events and broke five pool records en route to a 166-96 win at Swarthmore Saturday afternoon. Larkin Helman and Bryce Lloyd led the Blue Jays with two wins each.
 
Hopkins wasted no time getting in the record books as the team of Aden Li, Jonathan Wang, Avery Clapp and Christian Mayr swam a 1:30.60 in the 200 Medley Relay to break the Ware Pool record. Helman made it two straight wins and two straight pool records as he led a contingent of Blue Jays that swept the top four spots in the 400 IM. Helman led the way with his swim of 3:59.87, the only swimmer to break four minutes. Matthew Hartshorn took second (4:04.64), followed by Joe Castagno (4:05.13) and Will Dunlap (4:05.95).
 
Josiah March took second place in the 200 Free as he touched in 1:42.70. Jay Heymann followed in third (1:43.19) and Jonik Surprenant finished fourth (1:44.45). Lloyd then led a JHU sweep of the top three spots in the 100 Back. Lloyd clocked in at 49.85 to beat Dylan Jewett by just two-hundredths of a second. Daniel Byrnes finished in third place with a swim of 52.74.
 
Wang placed second in the 100 Breast with a time of 57.40, just one-hundredth of a second out of first place. Mitchell List followed in third (58.26) and Julian Maycock placed fourth (58.98). Hopkins got back in the win column, and took down another pool record, with Clapp's swim of 1:50.72 in the 200 Fly. Li followed in a close second, just 0.18 seconds behind Clapp. Mayr grabbed second place in the 50 Free in 21.23, beating Adam Sandid to the wall by three-hundredths of a second.
 
Mayr then placed third in the 100 Free with a swim of 47.20, followed closely by Heymann in fourth (47.29). Lloyd led another sweep for the Blue Jays, this time in the 200 Back, as they claimed the top four spots. Lloyd took the win as he clocked in at 1:50.09. Clapp finished in second place (1:50.38), followed by Jewett (1:52.53) and March (1:53.72). Eric Ji turned the same trick in the 200 Breast and broke a pool record in the process. He swam a 2:03.89 to take the win and the record. Castagno finished in second (2:04.48), while List took third (2:08.75) and Maycock took fourth (2:09.49).
 
Hopkins nearly made it three in a row, as the Blue Jays went one-two-three in the 500 Free. Jack Cornish led the field and took the win with a swim of 4:39.21. Byrnes finished in second place (4:39.79) and was followed by Surprenant in third (4:41.90). Li then took second in the 100 Fly as he touched in 49.16 and Rad Couture finished in third in 50.91.
 
In the final individual event of the afternoon, the Blue Jays made it another sweep and another record. Helman led the field in the 200 IM, clocking in at 1:52.32. Ji took second place in 1:54.55 and Dunlap finished in third place in 1:55.94. Hopkins ended the meet with second and third place finishes in the 200 Free Relay. The team of Mayr, Sandid, Clapp and Wang swam a 1:23.95 for second. Andrew Gilbert, Couture, Li and Heymann followed in 1:25.68 for third place.
 
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, January 25 as the Blue Jays host the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats. The meet is scheduled for a 12:00 pm start at the Newton White Aquatic Center.
