Difalco, Pimental, Roybal, Pomykata Pick Up Blue Jay Wins

BALTIMORE, MD – Visiting York won three straight bouts to break open a close match and the Spartans went on to a 27-18 non-conference victory over host Johns Hopkins in Goldfarb Gym Saturday afternoon. The win improves York's record to 4-2, while the Blue Jays slip to 1-4.

Where the Match Was Won
With the match tied at 12-12 entering the match at 174, the Spartans picked up a pair of first-period pins at 174 and 184 and earned a win by decision at 197 to lock up the victory.  Josh Stahl needed just 1:44 to grab a win by fall at 174 and John Wendell followed at 184 with a pin of his own in 2:34 to make the team score 24-12. Owen Dixon then secured the win was he broke a 3-3 tie with John Libby entering the third period with a reversal to go up 5-3 and used a riding time point to pick up a 6-3 decision.

Blue Jay Winners
After the Blue Jays fell behind 9-0, they got on the board at 141 with a 4-0 victory from freshman Giorgio Difalco.

After York went up 12-3 with a win by decision at 149, the Blue Jays pulled even with back-to-back bonus-point wins at 157 and 165.  Sophomore Freddy Pimental scored a 9-0 major decision of Frank Gulli at 157 trim the deficit to 12-7.  Pimental used a first-period takedown and a four-point second-period nearfall to fuel his win.

Graduate student Chris Roybal added a technical fall at 165 to draw the Jays even.  Roybal used a first-period takedown and eight nearfall points to grab a quick 11-0 lead.  He then added a second-period takedown and tacked on a riding time point to close out a 15-0 victory.

The Blue Jays closed things out with a first-period pin at 285 to account for the 27-18 final score.  Junior Jacob Pomykata sprinted to a 6-1 lead on the strength of two early takedowns and then finished off Hank Farrell in 2:14.

Notes of Interest
Pimental's win was his team-best 18th of the season with 13 of the 18 earning bonus points.  Roybal inched closer to his 50th career win as he bumped his record to 48-22 overall, including 13-3 this season.  Pomykata picked up eighth win of the season total – all eight have come by pin.  He is now three pins shy of the program single-season record for pins by a heavyweight (Hank Behaeghel – 11 (2021-22))
