Pomykata's Title Leads Hopkins to Sixth-Place Finish at Shenandoah

Senior Grabs First Career Tournament Title

WINCHESTER, VA - The Johns Hopkins wrestling team got an individual title from senior Jacob Pomykata (285) to fuel a sixth-place finish for the Blue Jays at the 12-team Shenandoah Invitational on Sunday.  The Blue Jays totaled 109 points to earn their sixth-place finish with Alvernia winning the team title with 291.5 points.

Pomykata, who was named the Tournament's Outstanding Wrestler, went 4-0 on the day to pick up his individual title.  He opened his day with a 17-0 technical fall victory over Alvernia's Tyler Carter and slipped past Chase Smith in sudden victory in the quarterfinals. He added another tight win in the semifinals with a 2-1 victory over Jalen Terry Winston of Apprentice to move into the title bout.

In the finals, Pomykata drew Alvernia's Owen Reber and built a 16-2 third-period lead on the strength of four takedowns and a four-point nearfall before he locked down his title with a pin at the 5:44 mark.

Pomykata's title is the first in-season tournament title for a Johns Hopkins heavyweight in the last 15 seasons.

In addition to Pomykata's title, the Blue Jays got third-place finishes from sophomore Duncan Stadler (133) and freshman AJ Gordon (174), who both went 3-1 on the day.  Stadler's three wins included one pin, one technical fall and one major decision, while Gordon added three bonus-point victories of his own with two majors and a technical fall.

The Blue Jays added a trio of sixth-place finishers in Kadin Khalloufi (174), Max Apsel (141) and Charles Dunn (197) and a seventh-place finish from Giorgio Difalco (149).

Khallofi won five of his six bouts on the day with three pins and two technical falls to his credit, while Apsel and Difalco both went 4-2.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, November 22 when the Blue Jays travel to Muhlenberg for the Scotty Wood Invitational.
