MADISON, NJ – Johns Hopkins opened the dual meet portion of its schedule on Sunday at the Drew Invitational and won of it six meets. JHU beat Wheaton, Wagner, Cleveland State, Drew and Detroit Mercy. The Blue Jays' lone loss came in a tight 14-13 match with the NJIT Highlanders.
Hopkins opened the day with a 24-3 win over Wheaton.
Larry Cai and
Alex Jeffords each went 3-0 to lead the Sabre squad to an 8-1 win.
Yi Ping Sha then did the same in a 7-2 win by the Foil squad.
Ayan Bhatnagar,
Jorge Gana and
Jamie Knox combined for a 9-0 win by the Epee squad.
JHU then beat Wagner, 21-6. Cai again won each of his three bouts as the Sabre squad won 6-3.
Josh Sima turned the same trick to lead the Foil squad to a 7-2 win. Knox and Gana again went undefeated, and the Epee squad won 8-1.
The Blue Jays then dropped a hard-fought match against the Highlanders. The Sabre squad grabbed a 5-4 win behind two wins each from
Neil Pandey and
Noah Zeng. The Foil squad lost 5-4 with Sima leading the Blue Jays with two wins. Knox, Bhatnagar, Gana and
Ethan Insler won one bout each in a 5-4 loss by the Epee squad.
Hopkins rebounded with a 20-7 win over Cleveland State. Pandey won his three bouts to lead the Sabre squad to a 7-2 win.
Vir Gogoi did the same in leading the Foil squad to a tight 5-4 win. Knox and Insler won three bouts each to pace the Epee squad to an 8-1 win.
JHU followed with a 23-4 win over host Drew. The Sabre squad on 7-2 behind three Cai wins. Sima,
Omar Reyes and
Alastair Thompson combined for a 9-0 Foil win. Gana and Insler won three bouts each to lead the Epee squad to a 7-2 win.
Hopkins wrapped up the day with a 23-4 win over Detroit Mercy. Cai went 3-0 for the fourth time and the Sabre squad won 8-1. Reyes and
Spencer Grossman Smisek combined for six wins as the Foil squad won 8-1. Bhatnagar won each of his three bouts to lead the Epee squad to a 7-2 win.
JHU returns to action on Sunday, November 9 at the Columbia Invitational.
Notes: Jeffords needs seven wins to reach 200 for his career in the Sabre.
