MADISON, NJ – The Johns Hopkins Sabre squad won the Eastern Women's Fencing Conference (EWFC) title on Sunday while the Blue Jays finished fourth overall. Hopkins went 4-2 on the day and fell in the third-place match to Tufts. In addition,
Rosy Cepero earned her 200
th career win. The Sabre squad finished the day with a 48-6 record.
Hopkins opened with a 23-4 win over Stevens, including a shutout by the Foil squad. Cepero,
Bethany Lee and
Camille Oteyza each won three bouts in the Foil.
Josephine Chang and
Jessie Tong won three bouts apiece to lead the Sabre squad to an 8-1 win. And in the Epee,
Mariela Abramson,
Ameera Ebrahim and
Katelyn McShine won twice each and the Jays won 6-3.
JHU then beat host Drew, 20-7, with wins by the Sabre (8-1) and Foil (8-1) squads. Cepero and Oteyza once again won each of their three bouts in the Foil.
Maya Balakumaran went undefeated to lead the Sabre squad to the win. Ebrahim won two of her three bouts in a 5-4 loss by the Epee squad.
Hopkins followed with back-to-back 27-0 wins over Yeshiva and the City College of New York. Balakumaran again went 3-0 to lead the Sabre squad against the Maccabees. Lee, Oteyza and
Sophia Baleeiro did the same for the Foil squad. And in the Epee, Abramson, McShine and
Janie McSweeney turned the same trick. Against the Beavers,
Adele Dai and
Ky McSweeney combined for six wins in the Sabre. Cepero, Oteyza and Baleeiro won all nine bouts for the Foil squad. Abramson and
Janie McSweeney earned six wins in the Epee.
The Blue Jays then lost a heartbreaker, 14-13, to the Wellesley Blue in the final round robin match. Chang and
Lauren Prieur won three bouts each to lead the Sabre squad to an 8-1 win. Lee won two of three bouts as the Foil squad lost 6-3. McShine and
Anika Kale picked up one win each and the Epee squad fell 7-2.
Hopkins then faced off against Tufts in the third-place match, with the Jumbos winning 15-12.
Maddie Huang went 3-0 to lead the Sabre squad to a 6-3 win. Cepero won two of three bouts, and earned her 200
th win, in a 6-3 loss by the Foil squad. Ebrahim, McShine and Kale won one bout each in a 6-3 loss in the Epee.
Due to inclement weather, the individual portion of the championships were cancelled. Individual awards will be calculated based on the team competition and will be announced later.
