GETTYSBURG, PA – Host Gettysburg got a match-clinching pin at 197 pounds to grab a nine-point lead with one bout to go and the Bullets went on to a 24-18 victory over visiting Johns Hopkins in the Blue Jays' final Centennial Conference dual meet of the season.
Â
Where the Match Was Won
After Johns Hopkins turned an early 14-3 deficit into a 15-14 lead with three straight wins at 157, 165 and 174, the Bullets got a 14-2 major decision victory from Carson Pascoe at 184 to go up 18-14 with two bouts remaining.
Â
At 197 pounds, Johns Hopkins
Samuel Gledhill jumped out to a big early lead and had Phil Nave on his back in a pinning position, but Nave scored a reversal and locked up the win for the Bullets when he scored a pin at the 2:28 mark. The pin gave the Bullets an insurmountable 24-15 lead with one match remaining.
Â
Johns Hopkins won five of nine contested bouts, but a forfeit at 125 and the two late bonus-point wins for the Bullets were more than the Blue Jays could overcome.
Â
Blue Jay Winners
A
Duncan Stadler 11-5 decision of Kyle Collins at 133 was the only bout that went the Blue Jays' way between 125 and 149 as the Jays found themselves in the early 14-3 hold.
Â
Sophomore
Freddy Pimental started the Blue Jay comeback at 157 with a 7-6 victory over Gavin Pascoe and
Chris Roybal followed with a 5-3 decision of Joseph Dietz at 165.
Â
Now trailing just 14-9, the Blue Jays grabbed the 15-14 lead when junior
Connor Powell stuck Kobe McHugh-Moore just 28 seconds into the second period. Angled to the side of McHugh-Moore, Powell worked into a standing cradle position and sent Kobe McHugh-Moore to his back or a quick pin.
Â
Junior
Jacob Pomykata was the final winner on the night for the Blue Jays as he capped the dual with a 7-2 victory over Simon Taylor at 285.
Â
Notes of Interest
The win for Pomykata is the 40
th of his career, while the pin for Powell is the 16
th of his career. Powell's pin extended JHU's single-season record for team wins by fall to 84. Roybal, Powell and Pimental all moved to 4-1 in Centennial duals this season with their victories tonight.
