SAINT PETER, MN – Johns Hopkins won four of six singles matches to rally for a 4-3 win over eighth-ranked Swarthmore Saturday in the consolation draw at ITA National Team Indoor Championship. The 11
th-ranked Blue Jays even their record at 1-1 while the Garnet fall to 0-2.
Swarthmore swept the doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles. Kai Chen and Andres Fente took the first match, winning 6-2 over
Dylan Blenkiron and
Brian Yi at two. Max Lindstrom and Winston Zhang then secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win over
Mukundh Boopathi and
Joshua Kim at three. Purushotham Koduri and Michael Melnikov then took a tight 7-6 (5) decision over
Allen Gong and
Chakor Rajendra at one.
Melnikov opened singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Rajendra at one to put the Garnet up 2-0. Boopathi answered when he beat Lalith Suresh 6-2, 6-3 at four. Gong then tied the match, 2-2, when he won 6-2, 7-5 over Lindstrom at two. Rishi Verma put Swarthmore back on top with a close 6-4, 6-4 win over Yi at five.
Blenkiron tied the match again with a three-set win at three singles. He won the first set 6-3, but Nikola Galov answered with a 6-4 win in the second. Blenkiron then took the match with a 6-3 third set win. Kim completed the Blue Jays' comeback with a three-set win at six. He grabbed the first set 7-5, but Seth Sadikov forced a third with a 6-4 in the second. Kim then won six straight games to take the third set, 6-0, and clinch the win for the Blue Jays.
Hopkins will take on the winner of Emory and host Gustavus Adolphus in the fifth-place match on Sunday.
