SAINT PETER, MN – For the second straight day, Johns Hopkins rallied to defeat a top 10 team at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. Hopkins came from behind to beat sixth-ranked Emory, 4-3, to finish in fifth place at the championships. The Blue Jays improve to 2-1 while the Eagles fall to 3-2.
Emory took the doubles point with wins at one and two to take the early 1-0 lead in the match. Ruilin Feng and Arjay Kartik won 6-3 over
Allen Gong and
Chakor Rajendra at one. Stefan Karatosic and Daniel Kim then clinched the point with a 6-4 win over
Mukundh Boopathi and
Joshua Kim at three.
Brian Yi and
Dylan Blenkiron were tied 6-6 at two doubles with Matthew Johnstone and Dean Kamenev.
Feng pushed the Eagles' lead to two with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Rajendra at one singles. Blenkiron answered with 6-0, 6-2 win at three versus Ryan Nash to make it 2-1. Johnstone answered with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Yi at five to put Emory up 3-1.
It was all Hopkins from there. Gong dropped his first set 6-4, but rallied to beat Kamenev 6-2, 6-2 to make it a 3-2 match. Boopathi followed with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 win at four versus Daniel Kim to tie the match. And once again, the match came down to
Joshua Kim and six singles. Kartik took the first set 6-4, but
Joshua Kim answered with a 7-6 (6) win in the second and then clinched the win and the match with a 6-4 win.
Hopkins returns to action on Friday, February 27 at 33rd-ranked Washington & Lee. The match is scheduled for a 2:00 pm.
Notes: Gong now has 99 career wins, leaving him just one shy of becoming the 19
th player in program history with 100 wins.
