SWARTHMORE, PA – The No. 4/5 Johns Hopkins baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Swarthmore on Saturday afternoon, falling 12-6 in the opener and 8-4 in game two. With the losses, the Blue Jays move to 27-8 overall and 10-4 in conference play.
Game 1
Starting pitcher
Ryan Anderson ran into early trouble as Swarthmore struck first in the second inning, plating two runs on a double steal and an RBI double to take a 2-0 lead.
Hopkins answered in the top of the third, loading the bases before
Alex Shane drove in the Blue Jays' first run with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 2-1. Back-to-back RBI singles from
William Jaun and
Lukas Geer gave Hopkins its first lead of the game at 3-2.
The Blue Jays added to their advantage in the fourth when
Jacob Harris launched a two-run home run on the first pitch he saw, extending the lead to 5-2. Geer followed with an RBI single in the fifth to push the lead to 6-2. However, that would be the final run production for Hopkins, as the offense was held scoreless the rest of the way.
Swarthmore (22-12, 7-7) responded with 10 unanswered runs—one in the fifth, two in the sixth and seven in the seventh—to secure the 12-6 victory. A pair of RBI doubles cut the deficit to 6-5 before the Garnet erupted in the seventh. Three consecutive singles tied the game at 6-6, and a combination of defensive miscues and a two-run home run helped Swarthmore pull away.
