BALTIMORE, MD – Eighth-ranked Swarthmore won four of six singles matches to grab a 4-3 win over seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays slip to 14-6 on the season while the Garnet improve to 18-6.
Hopkins grabbed the doubles' point with wins at one and two to take the early lead in the match.
Dylan Blenkiron and
Brian Yi won the first match of the day with a 7-5 win over Max Lindstrom and Winston Zhang.
Allen Gong and
Chakor Rajendra then clinched the point when they beat Michael Melnikov and Utham Koduri, 6-4, at one. Kai Chen and Andres Fente prevented the sweep with a tight 7-6 win over
Mukundh Boopathi and
Pranav Gadiraju at two.
Fente won the first singles' match to get the Garnet on the board when he won 6-3, 6-2 over Boopathi at five. Lindstrom then put the visitors on top with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Blenkiron at two. Rajendra answered with a 6-1, 7-6 win at three over Rishi Verma to tie the match at 2-2.
Jason Li gave the Blue Jays back the lead when he won 6-3, 7-5 over Nikola Galov at four. Melnikov the came from behind to win 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 at one versus Gong and make it a 3-3 match. Dylan Hayes Gilbert clinched the Swarthmore win with a 2-6, 7-6, 6-2 win over
Joshua Kim at six.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, April 29 at Mary Washington.
