BALTIMORE, MD – Host and second-ranked Salisbury used a three-goal third quarter to take control in a 4-1 win over fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins Wednesday evening. The Blue Jays fall to 3-2 on the season while the Sea Gulls improve to 5-0.
The Blue Jays struck first when they cashed in on a penalty corner with 2:21 left in the half.
Evie Hamm ripped a shot off the
Sophia Builione insert, but it was saved by defender Regan Nacrelli. The ball ricocheted right to
Ava Zimmerman, who batted it into the open cage.
Salisbury answered early in the third quarter, scoring off a corner just 2:51 in. Dakotah Trader tipped in Layla Kent's shot from the top of the circle to tie the game at one. Six minutes later, the Sea Gulls had the lead when Trader redirected a centering pass from Alex Kupper.
SU pushed its lead to two, taking advantage of another corner late in the third. Kent fired a hard shot just inside the circle off a pass from Ryan Lowe and it was 3-1. Lowe took a short pass from Kent off a corner and fired a shot inside the right post 3:13 into the fourth to stake SU to a 4-1 lead.
Hopkins finished with a 9-8 edge in shots and an 8-5 advantage in corners.
Aubrey Kilgore finished with a pair of saves in three quarters, while
Jessica Lapidus did not face a shot in the second quarter. Maddie Castaneda notched one save for the Sea Gulls.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, September 19 as the Blue Jays visit 18
th-ranked Washington & Lee. Game time is slated for 12:00 pm.
