BALTIMORE - Johns Hopkins forward Ashley Robbins (Newtown Square, PA/Westtown School) scored with 9:12 remaining to break a 1-1 tie as the Blue Jays field hockey team defeated the University of Scranton, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field in the season opener for both teams. Scranton had a chance to tie the game in the final 30 seconds, but could not get a shot off of two penalty corners. The final corner came as time expired. Robbins' goal came after the Royals had tied the game with 27 minutes left, when Maureen Bole scored off a pass from Patricia Donaghy. Hopkins forward Kelly Hewitt (Oreland, PA/Springfield Township) opened the scoring with 3:26 remaining in the first half when her shot deflected off a Scranton defender and into the goal. The Blue Jays out-shot the Royals, 9-4, and had a 7-4 edge in penalty corners. Starting goalkeeper Missi Schafhauser (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) did not register a save in picking up the victory. Scranton goalie Kimberly Reynolds had three saves in defeat. Hopkins will return to action Tuesday afternoon, when the Blue Jays host York College at 4:30 p.m. at Homewood Field.
