Trinda Derstine scored two goals and added an assist to lead the No. 18 Eastern Mennonite field hockey team to a 4-2 win over No. 13 Johns Hopkins Saturday afternoon.
The Royals improved to 8-2 with the win, while Hopkins fell to 4-4.
Jennie Hunter opened the scoring for Eastern Mennonite just 2:36 into the contest by scoring an unassisted goal. The Royals increased their lead to two when Derstine scored off an assist from Kristin Moyer with just under nine minutes remaining in the half.
JHU junior forward Heather Warnken (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh) got the Blue Jays on the board by scoring off an assist from sophomore forward Kate Mandel (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley) with 4:49 remaining in the half, but Jonalyn Denlinger put Eastern Mennonite back up by two with an unassisted goal with just 18 seconds left in the half.
Derstine scored her second goal of the game with 3:53 remaining to make it a 4-1 game, and Hopkins junior forward Rachel Callaway (Ardmore, PA/Lower Merion) concluded the scoring with an unassisted goal, her first of the season, at the 2:32 mark.
Emily Chamelin recorded two saves for the Royals, while Hopkins senior goalkeeper Missi Schafhauser (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) made seven saves.
Eastern Mennonite out-shot the Blue Jays, 20-6, and held a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Hopkins returns to action Tuesday when the Blue Jays host Villa Julie at 7 p.m.
