Blue Jays Cruise Past Villanova, 19-3

April 17, 2002

Baltimore, MD - Senior attacker Erin Wellner (East Williston, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) scored three goals and dished out five assists and sophomore midfielder Heidi Pearce (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's) added five goals as the No. 17 Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team cruised past Villanova, 19-3, Wednesday night at Homewood Field.

With her eight-point performance, Wellner became just the sixth player in Hopkins history to reach the 200-point plateau.Senior attacker Jamie Larrimore (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) added four goals and an assist for the Blue Jays, who improved to 8-5 on the season. The win, which tied for the third largest margin of victory since the Blue Jays joined Division I, was Hopkins' eighth win in its last 10 games. Villanova dropped to 7-6.

The Blue Jays wasted no time in taking command, as Larrimore scored off a Wellner assist just 1:08 into the game. Wellner assisted on the next two goals, scored by Pearce and freshman midfielder Kristen Miller (Baltimore, MD/Notre Dame Prep), to give Hopkins a 3-0 lead with 22:53 left in the first half. Larrimore then added consecutive goals before Cecily Pierce scored for the Wildcats to cut the Blue Jays' lead to 5-1.

Hopkins would respond, as Pearce scored a free position goal and junior attacker Meghan Burnett (Auburn, NY/Auburn) scored back-to-back goals to make it an 8-1 game at the 8:28 mark. Goals by Larrimore, Wellner, and Pearce gave the Blue Jays a commanding 11-1 lead at the break.

JHU continued to pour it on in the second half, as Pearce and Wellner scored unassisted goals in the first four minutes of the half. Meghan Carolan scored for Villanova to break Hopkins' eight-goal run and cut the lead to 13-2, but three minutes later sophomore midfielder Kate Barcomb (Middlebury, VT/Middlebury) scored to ignite a JHU 6-0 run. Lindsey Syphard scored an unassisted goal with 3:32 left to account for the final margin.

In addition to stellar performances by Wellner, Pearce, and Larrimore, Hopkins also got two goals from Burnett and one each from freshman attacker Erin Riordan (Brightwaters, NY/Bay Shore), senior attacker Christy Peterson (Fallston, MD/Fallston), junior attacker Liz Holland (Catonsville, MD/Mount de Sales), Barcomb, and Miller.

The Hopkins starting defense of Kate Gilland (Medford, NJ/Shawnee), Caroline Miller (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephens & St. Agnes), Lacey-Leigh Hentz (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll), and Liz Renaut (Annapolis, MD/Severn) held Villanova to just 14 shots. Junior Jen McDonald (Garden City, NY/Garden City) needed to make just four saves and allowed just two goals in 38 minutes of action, while freshman Catherine Sawyer (Whitehouse Station, NY/Hunterdon Central Regional) came on to make one save in the final 22 minutes.

The Blue Jays return to action Wednesday when Hopkins travels to Hofstra for a 3 p.m. matchup with the Pride.
