Baltimore, MD - Stephanie Derstine scored two goals and Jonalyn Denlinger added a goal and two assists to lead the No. 8 Eastern Mennonite field hockey team to a 5-3 win over Johns Hopkins Saturday night at Homewood Field.
The Royals, who improved to 10-0 on the season, struck first with 28:14 remaining in the first half when Jenny Hunter collected a rebounded and beat JHU goalkeeper Meredith Shifman (South Orange, NJ/Columbia). The Blue Jays tied the game when senior midfielder Ashlee Duncan (Easton, MD/Easton) one-timed a pass from senior forward Jenny Farrelly (Clinton Township, NJ/North Hunterdon) into the cage at the 19:08 mark.
Eastern Mennonite regained the lead with 2:21 left in the half as Derstine scored off a feed from Lisa Ehst, and Derstine added her second goal 1:10 later by scoring off a Denlinger pass.
The Blue Jays made it a 3-2 game early in the second half when sophomore midfielder Meighan Roose (Baltimore, MD/York-ME) took a feed from Duncan and blasted a shot past Royals goalkeeper Christina Bender with 34:02 remaining. Hopkins had a chance to tie the game just over two minutes later, but Farrelly was stopped on a penalty stroke by Bender, who was making her first appearance in goal this season.
Kristen Moyer, who came into the game leading Division III in goals and points, scored her 19th goal of the season off an assist from Denlinger with 25:51 to play, and Denlinger added an unassisted goal with 19:58 left to give Eastern Mennonite a three-goal lead.
Senior forward Kelly Hewitt (Stafford, VA/Springfield Township-PA) scored off an assist from Duncan at the 6:51 mark, but Hopkins could not get closer and fell to 3-6 on the season.
Shifman made 10 saves in 56:22 while freshman Dayna Eng (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) stopped one shot in 13:38 for the Blue Jays. Bender made 11 saves in the Royals goal.
Hopkins returns to Centennial Conference action Tuesday when the Blue Jays host Swarthmore at 6 p.m. at Homewood Field.
