BALTIMORE, MD - Sophomore Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh School) drilled a game-winning two-run home run in the opener and went 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs in the second game to lead Johns Hopkins to a sweep of Swarthmore this afternoon in a Centennial Conference doubleheader. JHU took the opener, 4-3, before an easy 23-8 win in the nightcap.

The Blue Jays improved to 16-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference and have won seven consecutive games overall. Swarthmore fell to 2-13 overall and 1-5 in Centennial action.

With Hopkins trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh of the opening game, Winterling belted his team-leading sixth home run over the scoreboard in left-center field. With one out, sophomore Mike Spiciarich (Syosset, NY/Chaminade) walked and reached second on a wild pitch.

JHU led 2-0 after scoring single runs in the first and fourth innings. Junior Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) drove in senior Jay Cieri (Pine Brook, NJ/Montville) with a fielder's choice in the first, and senior Joe Urban (Nanticoke, PA/Bishop Hoban) drove in Cetta with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Swarthmore took the lead with three runs in the top of the sixth on the strength of four hits and a walk. The Garnet scored on a hit by pitch with the bases loaded, a sacrifice fly and an RBI single to left field.

Junior Matt Righter (Clarion, PA/Lawrenceville Prep) improved to 3-0 for Hopkins with two scoreless innings in relief of starter Ryan McConnell (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor). McConnell allowed three runs on five hits in five innings while striking out seven. Righter struck out two and gave up two hits in his two innings.

James Zvokel suffered the loss for Swarthmore and fell to 0-3 on the year. He went the distance and allowed four runs on six hits. Ryan Pannorfi, Matt Goldstein and Bill Farrell each collected two hits for the Garnet.

JHU's offense exploded in the second game as the Blue Jays scored 12 times in the first inning en route to a season-high 23 runs. Hopkins sent 17 batters to the plate in the inning, which included six hits, five walks and two errors. Spiciarich highlighted the inning with a three-run double to center field.

Swarthmore closed the gap to 12-8 with seven runs in the top of the second with the help of three JHU errors, but the Garnet would get no closer as the Blue Jays added runs in each of the next five innings.

Winterling finished the game 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two runs batted in, while Cetta was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Cieri was 1-for-1 with three walks and scored four runs, while Spiciarich, sophomore Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) and junior Brian Morley (Tappan, NY/Don Bosco Prep) each added two runs. In all, 13 different Blue Jays scored and 12 players drove in a run.

Junior Sven Stafford (Evanston, IL/Evanston) earned the win for JHU in his second start of the year. Stafford improved to 2-1 as he allowed three earned runs and four hits in four innings. Freshmen Jason Thayer (Finksburg, MD/Westminster) and Andrew Bail (Chicago, IL/Latin School) and sophomore Jason Hochfelder (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley) each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Ryan Pannorfi was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI for Swarthmore. Brandon King added a two-run double and also pitched the final three innings for the Garnet. Carlton Davis fell to 0-2 for Swarthmore as he suffered the loss after allowing 12 runs, two earned runs, on five hits in 0.2 innings.

The Blue Jays return to action Tuesday as Hopkins plays host to Washington College at 3:00 p.m.
