Blue Jays Fall to Kean, 2-0

Sept. 24, 2004

Stats

UNION, NJ -- Kean University scored once with no time left on the clock at the end of the first half and again late in the second as the Cougars handed the Johns Hopkins field hockey team its third straight loss, 2-0 Friday night. Kean improves to 6-2, while the Blue Jays fall to 2-5.

An entertaining first half that saw the two teams combine for 16 shots and nine penalty corners appeared destined to end in a 0-0 tie until the Blue Jays were called for an infraction as time expired. Per playing rules the Cougars were allowed to playout the ensuing penalty corner with no time left on the clock and they took full advantage of the opportunity.

Junior forward Tina Broomfield netted her team-leading sixth goal of the season off an assist from junior Cherie McNellis to give KU a 1-0 lead at the half.

The teams played evenly for the first 25 minutes of the second half before the Cougars netted what proved to be the insurance goal with just under 10 minutes remaining. Katie Burrini found Dina Taylor just inside the circle and Taylor slipped a shot past Blue Jay goalie Dayna Eng to account for the only goal of the second half.

Concetta Valerio made three saves in goal to earn the shutout for KU, while Eng made five saves for the Blue Jays.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Tuesday night when the Blue Jays open Centennial Conference play against Gettysburg at Homewood Field (7:00 pm). The Blue Jays defeated the Bullets, 4-3 in last season's Centennial Conference Championship game.
